Haven't bought Skyrim yet (was waiting for an Ultimate edition though now IDK if that'll happen) but this happened to me with Oblivion. Did so many side-quests I just got lost and so did my interest in the story (even forgot what the damn story was, but was too lazy to start over). Skyrim is apparently even worse in that regard, so I can't say I blame you.
