ok but why aren't we talking about puerto rico voting to become the 51st state??

Because no matter how they vote they're not going to become the 51st state any time soon. Many Americans who are even aware that Puerto Rico is a US territory want to sever ties and revoke citizenship, or at least stop giving it.

that's an awful excuse! it's still big news, that's always a reason to talk about issues. also, lots of americans are in favour of welcoming puerto rico as an official state. we tried it before, after all. it's not like the government is trying to keep them from it.

idk I'm seeing a lot of puerto ricans saying they don't want this and I can see their reasoning

the vote was close, yes. the majority still voted in favour of it, and that's pretty significant.

eta: as a commonwealth territory puerto rico is subject to a lot of american policies, but not being a state means its citizens don't have voting rights here. that's the biggest difference.

oh, I know, I just feel really neutral about it I guess. I hope however it turns out it's good.
