Re: enjoyment of one's craft

I...I have really bad news for you, then. That's life. I wish that adding a new skill set was as easy as writing it on a character sheet, but for most things, crafts, skills, what-have-you, you just have to put in the time.

It's not just crafts. It's anything you do. Is there anything you've done that you were automatically good at? Success in life is determined by being the person who grinds through when it isn't fun. That's everything.

Going with art, because it's the thing I get, when I started out, my teachers had me drawing the most boring stuff. Boxes, rib bones, blind contour drawings of hands, that sort of thing. Over and over. They made me do abstract art, something I never will be good at. I had to slog through color theory classes and design classes, and hells, even a 3D design class where we built a load-bearing structure out of spaghetti. Not even gonna lie--I hated 90% of it.

And I needed pretty much all of it. Building a foundation isn't fun. It can be fun, at times. Those moments when you sit back and see that a project, or even just a piece of the project, came out better than expected, the part when you get into the groove, that moment when something just clicks. But there's a lot of just sucking.

It's a pride thing. You can't improve at anything if you're too proud. My first real art teacher, God bless her, had to break me of my habit of only doing things I was good at.

If it's a problem of journey vs destination, think of it as driving to Disney World. Driving through Florida is monotonous and sucky. But you don't get to Disney World if you can't do it.

Try knitting? I dunno, I found that knitting had a pretty quick learning curve. Knit a quick, crappy scarf in a week, and you're ready to try socks or gloves. It's very straight forward.

Bless you for another great reply. That's so true about life... especially at studying, and work. Shit so much of life is learning and trying to fail less next time.
