How do people "write them off"? I know people like them! They used to be in my primary school library :P

I'm pretty sure they mean that adults write those books off - and the OP does have a point. How many adult [or even young adult] books are there that are based around animals as the main characters? Not many, and the few that are there almost always play the secondary lead to a human.

Umm, I don't read animal stories because I don't find them as interesting as people stories...that and I'm totally weirded out by anthropomorphic animals. Leftover trauma from Wind in the Willows, I imagine. Anyway, my point is that my avoidance has nothing to do with the stories being somehow less, but everything to do with my preferences. Which, I hear, is an okay thing.

OH MY GOSH TIME STOPS FOR NO MOUSE. Those books were the best!

There are some bitchin' books with animal protagonists that are highly regarded by adults: Watership Down, Animal Farm, Wind in the Willows, Jungle Book (kinda), the Fox Woman, Call of the Wild, the Redwall series...

Cat mysteries seem to be pretty popular, too. I could never really get into them, except for maybe a couple of short stories.

Ugh, Animal Farm. I can't *stand* that book these days [or any Orwell book really.]

HERMUX TANTAMOQ! I used to love those books when I was younger. I should really reread them at some point.
