A Lorax secret that isn't about finding the Onceler sexually attractive, about other people finding the Onceler sexually attractive, or about how the movie is a shame to Dr Seuss and/or the environment?

Wow.

(I don't think there's anything wrong with seeing Ted as Korean even if you yourself are not? I mean the characters were probably mostly intended as white, but the art style makes it a little ambiguous.)

...I still find it a shame they made the Oncler into a woobie and pushed the 'big bad' onto a one dimensional villain. The original story acknowledged both sides had a point-That one was just "LOL FUCK THE TREES :D"

I agree with you about O'Hare- he added nothing to the story and took it in a direction that sort of garbled the message. I don't think woobie Onceler was that bad of a creative decision, though.

The original Lorax came out a long time ago, and environmentalism has changed. There's an obvious solution to the "both sides have a point" bit now- we have a lot more in the way of green technologies that can actually be used on a larger scale, so if Lorax is saying "natural resources!" and Onceler is saying "industry and jobs!", we have an answer for that! Onceler switches to a more environmentally friendly method of production, and grows & replaces his own trees, Lorax tolerates this because it's not really affecting the wild populations of trees and animals, everybody's happy.

Environmentalism has also become much more mainstream- it's not such a novel idea that it's bad to fuck up nature. Very few children who'd be at the movie wouldn't already know that you should try to make environmentally friendly decisions. Greedy environment movie villains aren't going to get any sympathy from modern kids. They are not going to be thinking, "wow, I need to watch out for this" because they already know that being a greedy asshole is bad.

The modern environmental problem is more "do I go out of my way to make environmentally friendly decisions, even though it might not be convenient and not everybody's going to approve?" That's a relevant problem and the problem they set out to tackle with this version of the Onceler. They didn't do it perfectly (the problem wasn't with the sustainable farming, it was with the dumb way they were doing it) but it was actually a good idea to start him out as someone who wanted to do the right thing, but refused to make it a priority and ended up doing horrible things because of it.

(wow i have too many feelings about this shit)
