CLAMP Thread, Part V

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
We're still in the hiatus zone, but don't lose hope -- December is just around the corner! First person to mention the X hiatus, KuroFay, SeiSub, DouWata, SakuSyao, or plot twists loses.

Today's theme is "artstyles." What do you think of CLAMP's evolution as artists (for better or for worse) since 1987? Which series features your favorite (or least favorite) artstyle, and why?

CLOVER! It's the right balance between the cute artwork of CardCaptor Sakura and the noodlepeople freakshow their style devolved into :( In order to make an impact, it didn't need the visually stunning but drawn-out, almost impossible to understand battles that seemed to fuel the last part of TRC; they went instead for long, stylised lines and a very minimalist way of handling the panelling (expansive overviews of EVERYTHING look great on a two-pages splash in a manga magazine I bet, but they can be too cluttered to make sense out of them). I adore insanely detailed manga (for example, anything Kaoru Mori writes I'll read, because she fascinates me with a ton of accurate and plausible detail) but here it'd have detracted from the overall tone of this story, so I'm glad they cut the shojo imagery and went for a more sober style. It feels like they took a clean, cinematographic, almost intimate approach to a quite messed up and complex world and rescued a little, broken story.

... I have too many feelings about this, so I'll cut my rant a bit short: Clover's the only of their manga in which I've found that their style is in actual, active service of the tale they're trying to tell. Lavish landscapes or profusely decorated clothing can be eye-catching and a treat for people interested in costume, but keeping the dramatic ornaments restricted to a few circumstances (Oluha's gowns, Suu's wings) definitely worked in favor of this story. Less distacting while still beautiful.

It goes without saying, this is by far my most beloved of their manga, if not my most beloved manga ever.

Yes! Yes! This is exactly how I feel about Clover. It's so much more than "just" a manga, it's a true work of art and it's breathtaking.

Which is why it's even more heart-breaking, for me, that it was set in Times New Roman for the Tokyopop English release. From what I recall, no one has changed that D:

If I'm completely honest, though xxxHolic was one of my favorites, I side-eyed the super long legs for a while. It's like, the characters had normal upper bodies, then those long stick carnival legs. XDDD

CLAMP has always been my favorite mangaka because their art style continually impresses me, though. It's beautiful. I liked seeing some of my old favorites redesigned in Tsubasa. Kamui... <333

*is a Kamui fan* *has made that obvious in posts* *really likes these CLAMP threads*

I think the art in XXXholic improved as the series continued and became a little less stylized (but still full of noodles).

I agree, as it went on, xxxHolic got some gorgeous art. And the noodles became endearing. XD

The series with my favorite artstyle has to be X. I'm slightly biased for 90s shoujo style, and the art in X is gorgeously detailed. I do like their newer stuff, but it doesn't come close.

I loved the highly styleized feel of holic. I refused to watch the anime when I tried the first ep and realized the art was typical anime with painted backgrounds. I was hoping for something more like the stark style of the manga.

I love how everything in early holic was black, white, or shaded gray with tightly spaced vertical lines. Almost no tone to be seen! It takes talent to pull that off.

But then, I agree with the above comment that Clover is completely gorgeous. I don't know if I could chose one above the other. Hmm.

I actually adore the art in xxxHolic, especially the highly detailed clothing and the pretty smoke and junk. The proportions do occasionally look a little off to me but most of the time I think it works as part of the art style. Finding the noodles delicious seems to be a pretty unpopular opinion!

A problem I seem to always have with CLAMP's art is that every action scene, to me, is so busy that half the time I'm not really sure what's going on.

Oh hey you guys, also, I'd like to share a link that I think some of you might appreciate:

It's an ex-X fan rereading the manga and blogging their experience. I find their commentary really hilarious, but just be warned that it's, er, not the kindest.

I really loved the art in RG Veda. It's what drew me to CLAMP in the first place.

Though Gate7 has some gorgeousness too.

I'm the same anon that responded to the poster above about Clover, but I agree with you about RG Veda, too. There's something about it that really appeals to me.

I'd say....from MKR to Chobits are my favorite styles. But my favorite is the giant eyes and such from MKR. That's always been CLAMP to me. I wasn't a fan of the art style in TRC or xxxholic or anything since. It's not CLAMP any more. :C

Though, the ONLY person I loved in those styles was Yuko. She was MADE for that style, but no one else fit.
