TW Attempted Rape on Keeping Up Appearances
(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)I rewatched the episode "Golfing with the Major". In summary, the Major invited Richard and Hyacinth to a golfing resort for a weekend. Major and Richard would golf while the wives entertained themselves. Only Mrs Major didn't come, but that's okay, Hyacinth can entertain herself and make new friends in her pushy comedic way. But oh no, the Major's old war wound is acting up and he can't go golfing. As a good host should, he's found Richard (who hates golfing and doesn't want to do any of this) a new partner. Luckily the old war wound (clearly fake by the way he's skipping about) doesn't keep the Major from inviting Hyacinth out for a drive in the lovely resort countryside. On this drive, he parks in a secluded area and begins groping Hyacinth while chattering on about how he likes older women. Hyacinth escapes his advances and makes it back to the resort hotel looking much the worse for wear and tells Richard they're going home now. On the way home, she mentions the drive to her husband only by saying that the Major "paid her a compliment". Cue credits.
An even shorter summary: the Major lures the couple away from home, seperates the wife, ditches the husband, forces himself on the wife, the whole thing is played for laughs, and the wife doesn't tell anyone what happened.
That was yesterday, and it really disturbed me. Mostly because of the 'it was played for laughs' aspect. I sure as fuck didn't laugh. I keep fantasizing about my OCMarySues jumping in to rescue Hyacinth and making sure the phrase 'no means no' is etched into the Major's soul (or forehead, depending on the OC).
I also keep wondering if Hyacinth has some really rosy rose-tinted glasses about people of 'a certain social standing' or if she's just couldn't face what had happened. Is she nuts or was she traumatized? Did she ever tell Richard what really happened? Did the Major ever get invited to another candlelight supper?
Or maybe I'm putting to much thought into an old show... :/

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, Hyacinth definitely casts people in higher social standings in a more positive light, and that's part of the show's humor because it's very frequently the people she looks down upon who are generally more relatable (ex: her sisters Daisy and Rose and brother-in-law Onslow). There's another episode with her sister Violet, who is clearly having major issues with her husband, but Hyacinth kind of... ignores that because Violet is in the upper middle class like her.
So she isn't really nuts. Like you said, she just has a really rosy view of people of a certain standing.
(Also really sure that the Major was a one-episode character and the incident never came up again. Keeping Up Appearances didn't really have story or character arcs, so.)
Re: TW Attempted Rape on Keeping Up Appearances
(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)The Major was in a previous episode. He walks by, she greets him, he greets back and calls her a minx. Later he phones her to invite her to come over and grab some flowers from his conservatory for her dinner that evening. She walks over, gets the flowers, he makes a pass/grope at her, and there's a few seconds of running around a table before she makes it outside (flowers and hair much-rumpled from the run).
So she knew he was a perv before, but ignored it in favor of her 'social status' schtick.
I don't know if he's in more episodes. I'm only on the second disc.
