I learned very early on that logic had no place in the teachings of my cult so I don't really care to speculate if they had thought that nugget out.

I got your intent but it's just a weird way of putting it.

I'll admit I'm very likely oversensitive because I have been and have worked with people who start off badly in life and generally are ignored by society and that ignorance is perpetuated by the attitude that "bad things don't really happen in our community".

I understand that you didn't use the word "doesn't" but just saying that it "shouldn't happen in America" implies America is some separate beast where things are naturally different and it's abnormal for some people to be assholes when they can get away with it.
