She doesn't put up with him because he's brilliant. She puts up with him because she likes him and enjoys his company and he makes her laugh and his assholery doesn't bother her and she can handle him like a boss. Seriously -- in that relationship, one of them definitely wears the pants and it sure as fuck ain't Tony ;)

How am I being sexist? I don't like John either for putting up with Sherlock (even if they're not in a romantic relationship). TBH, I never got the vibe that she wore the pants in the relationship since it always seemed like she felt obligated to deal with his bullshit.

To be clear: their scene in The Avengers didn't give you the vibe that she wore the pants, and The Avengers made her seem like she was obligated to deal with his bullshit?

Because they weren't in a relationship before The Avengers. She was his assistant who he had crush on and who had a crush on him. And he kind of spent most of Iron Man 2 having a giant nervous breakdown over the course of a couple weeks, during which she pointedly refused to deal with him until he got some of his shit together.

He has douche moments, and he can act like an asshole. That does not mean that he's a douchey asshole 100% of the time, and it also doesn't mean that he doesn't have qualities that other people enjoy about him.

But really, none of that matters. What matters is this: you will lack respect for someone because s/he happens to like someone whom you personally do not like. That is ridiculous.

for movies; she always know what kind of a person tony was, she probably saw every bad and every good of him. if she wants to be with hşm then fine because she knows she can leave(I think)

So much this. The massive steps of character development are the main reason I like Tony so much. It's so impressive to see some shallow selfish asshole just decide to become a better person and then do it -- gradually and with some missteps and stumbles, but still do it.

Pepper is the freakin bomb! Tony wouldn't be half so affective if he didn't have Pepper keeping him on target. She's probably >half of the reason why I enjoy the Iron Man comics so much.

But yeah, she's practically a super hero and most humans should aspire to but not be ashamed if they can't live to her standards.

I so relate, OP. OT, but I'm a girl and I sure as hell know that I wish I could find a guy who could put up with me and be as unruffled and unafraid to call me on my bullshit as Pepper is with Tony. But people never seem to assume women ever have that problem. It's only men, apparently. I'm reminded of that Beauty and the Beast secret from a few months ago. The gist of it was "I'm a girl, and I have always loved Beauty and the Beast. But I don't relate to Belle. I relate to the Beast."

Anyway, on-topic: This might be due to my own personal experiences, but people who comment that female character X should dump male character Y because he's "weird" or "difficult" and such bullshit frequently come off as unbelievably condescending and vaguely sexist to me. It's happened a lot in quite a few of my fandoms and this particular pairing is just one of many. Now, if the male character actually treats the female character badly and she's actually unhappy being with him, that's a totally different matter altogether and I would totally hate and judge a relationship like that. But seriously? Not every woman on earth wants a normal guy. Some women *gasp* don't mind weird, or difficult. Maybe they *double gasp* are in control of themselves and know they can dump his ass if he treats them in a way they don't want. Pepper totally knew exactly what she was getting into.

Plus, Pepper's a bit of a snide, smug, bossy asshole herself. So, should I respect Tony a little bit too, for not being irritated by her the way I'm sure some people would? Probably. Even if he's wayyyy more flawed than she is, it's still a relationship with two people, not a badness-level barometer solely for the man.
