(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be better to imagine this film as the start of his career, anon. That way both he and you will be able to weather a bad or nonexistent reception.

This I can see actually. It somebody getting into the industry, that implies a certain level of fandom esque love.
Though it's kinda iffy, true.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Loving an industry enough to want to join it does not make this fandom related.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Future-fandom maybe?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha oh my god are you me? I will laugh so hard if we are thinking of the same guy.

(I'd rather not go into details though, let's just pretend we are.)

Look, as someone who was in film school and has seen many bad film experiments...

Let your friend do it.

Sure, it might flop. In any case, it probably won't be life-changing as your friend thinks.

But...

Making a movie, even a small independent one, takes huge effort, time, and resources. You really HAVE to believe it's worth wile doing, because otherwise you get scared off at the first hurdle. Let your friend have this dream, because clearly they think it's important.

While this film won't change the world, it might change you friend's world, or be a way for them to get noticed and get job opportunities in more mainstream media. Your friend might meet interesting new people for collaboration at film festivals. You never know. In any case, it will probably be a valuable life experience.

All you can do is be there as a friend is if things do flop horribly, but don't be discouraging before the project is even started.

This is a good comment.

Not OP, in similar situation though

I definitely agree that the friend in question should go ahead and make the movie! I wish I had the kind of dedication to go through with a big creative project like that.

But sometimes it's not a case of "This isn't going to be as big as he's expecting", rather it's a case of "This is so stupid nobody is even going to take it seriously". 'Specially when the director is a control freak and views polite advice from everyone else involved as whining/interference.

See: my unvoiced opinion of 90% of my friends' fandom projects if they're not fic/art. 95% if it's got anything to do with a minor character or a non-popular pairing.

(I had a friend who was so, so excited about this huge fic she'd been planning for like two years. It was about an OC child of a secondary canon character and went into huge and slow-paced details about her life in the canon setting and how she grew up and how she had her own Big Adventure, eventually cutting out all but the most passing mention of any of the canon characters including her mother. I still don't know how to tell her that nobody is going to read this.)
