i'm sorry, but if a friend of mine told me they pitied me because i am unattractive i would be hurt and upset. i would not feel cared for at all. i don't need people to feel bad for me because i am ugly, it's totally belittling. and coming from a friend, someone who shouldn't care how you look to start with, would make it worse.

I didn't say feeling bad for them for being ugly. Just for not looking the way they wanna look. If my best friend wanted to be tall or skinny or wanted to be able to pull of pencil skirts without looking odd and just couldn't do it, I would feel bad for her. Not in 'lemme pat the poor thing' way. Just in a 'that fucking sucks and I'm sorry you're struggling' way.

Maybe part of the secret is that she feels bad for her friends when they want to look a certain way and can't, but wouldn't actually say that to their faces, hence putting it in a secret.

(In before "you're such a narcissist and I bet you're really ugly" comments.) For example, I find it easy to keep a slim figure, and most people don't. So when people complain about their weight, I feel bad because I rarely have that sort of problem. I don't say that to their faces. That doesn't make me a bad person because I recognize my privilege, it just makes me someone who recognizes how lucky she is and how unlucky some other people are in comparison.

da

I think sympathy is a better word for that and it's sounds less condescending/belittling than pity.

Very true. OP made a poor word choice. But somehow I think people would get on her case anyway.

DA

Perhaps, but at the end of the day if what the OP feels is pity instead of sympathy then...yeah. I'd feel hurt, upset and definitely put a little more distance between us because I cannot stand being looked down on enough to be pitied.

Annnnd that is why this is a secret. She isn't TELLING her friends that.
