I'm also brazilian, and although I also discovered about blackface in the internet, there is, indeed, <href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cu4xucuy7xo/tfchuaymmbi/aaaaaaaaojo/atjjzhovu_k/s1600/02.jpg">a brazilian version of it a .

You guys can all search "nega maluca carnaval" on google images, if you twisted fucks are curious about it.

I fucked up the HTML thingie. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
it is ok, the image did not work

google says the image is not found on their server

Sorry again! But it's basically an exemple of what a "Nega Maluca" costume is. You can see it on Google Images, but don't forget to put "Carnaval" after it or you're just gonna see pictures of our most common chocolate cake, haha.

Tell us about the cake, tell us about the cake!

It's the most delicious motherfucking cake of all history. Sweetass chocolate cake, kinda wet with guaraná, with brigadeiro and chocolate sprinkles on the top. It's heavenly. Best cake in the world.

Oh, I didn't knew about that, thank you for the information! I don't know the nega maluca thing, but I'm guessing it's something like Rei Momo or some carnaval groups like bloco dos sujos (for non-Brazilians, Rei Momo is the fattest man in the party, something kinda clown-ish, like the Feast of Fools, and that second thing is a recurrent party that I've seen in many states where the men dress like women in a very stereotypical and satyric manner)? Do you know the history behind that? I honestly don't know.

What I meant, mostly, is that we certainly don't have the same culture as the USA, and it's not a widespread thing here. It's most likely to see someone who doesn't knows about that than someone who does. We obviously have other racist things, but I don't think black-face is part of the Brazilian culture.

The "Nega Maluca" thing (for the non-brazilian folks, this can basically be translated as "Crazy N**ger", and it can both mean this carnaval female-blackface costume we are talking about and a very popular chocolate cake, haha) was born with a carnaval marchinha, if I'm not mistaken. There's entire carnaval groups for people to dress up as "Nega Maluca", but I don't believe there's much of a story behind of it besides the marchinha thing.

So, OP, if you are brazilian, there is blackface in our contry, unfortunately. It's not as widespread as the american version of it and it rarely appears on our midia, but it's there and it's indeed really offensive.

Same anon as above, just to explain a small thing: "Nega" has a bad connotation in a few brazilian cities, but it doesn't have the same racist background as "n**ger", being seen by the majority of people as an endearing name for people you like. I just translated it as "n**ger" because the carnaval costume itself has a racist connotation, and I wanted to make that clear.
