(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 01:46 am (UTC)(link)hint: attractiveness is subjective. people find all different things attractive. for example, with weight, some people are more attracted to leaner bodies, some people are more attracted to thicker bodies, whatever.
beauty standards are when people try to establish a universal definition of "attractive", and use it to judge people even in contexts completely unrelated to their looks.
i don't care if you're using your looks to get ahead because honestly, you'd be judged by them anyway whether or not you're even trying. whatever. who cares.
but your friends that don't fit the beauty standard aren't "unattractive". whatever they look like, there are guaranteed to be people out there who'd think they're hot/pretty, and people out there who don't think they're hot/pretty but would like them for other qualities they have. don't feel bad for them, jeez. the problem is not their inherent ugliness, the problem is that people are only recognizing one form of attractiveness, and that people judge others (especially women) as human beings for their looks.
you can be happy with your own appearance and do whatever you want with it, but if you like your friends as people please be aware that pitying them is pretty dehumanizing! there is nothing wrong with how they are.
