Edward kind of has a clue. At least, he seemed aware of how fucked up he was being back in the first book, except he just decided 'whatever, I'm not going to try being a decent person with regards to Bella anymore.' ...which just makes it worse how he deliberately manipulates her. But then he did try leaving, at least. And Bella should have gone into therapy and self-esteem counseling. But I digress.

Point is, even by normal human standards, Edward acted badly and he recognized it while the actually normal human couldn't. And also their bad relationship proceeds to be vindicated instead of something they grow out of. Digressing again.

Whereas Christian is just like "I'm fifty shades of fucked-up, Ana" purely so they can shoehorn in as many incidences of the phrase fifty shades as possible and then just carries on anyway and blames her for it about fifty percent of the time. So... about the same. But without the leaving. Point tentatively to Twilight, because at least Edward was trying, am I about following your point here?

Yes, point tentatively to Twilight.

... :| It's a small point, really, since Edward does a lot of Bella-blaming, but at least he sort of tries.

Fifty Shades Freed wtf does that even mean really

Twilight can have 0.001% of a point. It gets a slightly larger percentage of a point for "only" glorifying abuse and not actual direct rape. Honestly, having read the first book of each (well, most of the first 50 Shades one, anyway), Twilight is far less horrific. I can laugh at Twilight. 50 Shades... is also hilarious in places, but can be really uncomfortable as well.

It means "we ran out of titles that made sense"

personally I would have gone with like 50 Shades Brighter or something, if they're going for the WOW I FIXED HIM vibe

What I meant was, I don't really think either of them really knew what a healthy relationship was. Edward might have realized it wasn't quite healthy, but I don't think he actually had any experience with the good example, either.

See, the thing with him leaving, I found that interesting. Especially the way it was played out in the movie, I really saw that as two people being unable to stay away from each other despite knowing they're objectively better off alone. And that I do find an interesting dynamic to work with, in general. The problem lies in how it is glorified, and in the target audience, who reads the relationship as romantic and ideal, instead of seeing them as the two flawed/troubled individuals they are.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the bad relationship also vindicated in 50 shades?

I've managed to not think about 50 Shades until this moment. :P Mostly I was just thinking 'Edward sort of had a clue, at least.'

I can totally get behind them having a mutually-enjoyable but unhealthy relationship. It would be both more interesting and generally better if it had been treated as such.
