Well, I'm sure there's racism in your country, even if there's no history of blackface. Putting on brown skin as a costume that can be taken off later isn't a privilege actual brown-skinned people have. And a lot of brown-skinned cosplayers who cosplay pale-skinned characters get racist crap over it. It kinda sucks.

OP didn't say there's no racism, but people might not necessarily equate cosplaying with that. (besides, tanning a little is really not the same, imo)
lol, where I live a dark-skinned guy wanted to cosplay L, and he was all gung-ho about white makeup. In fact, everybody basically assumed he'd be wearing white makeup. I convinced him not to, not because of racism or anything, but because I didn't think it would look good on him, I thought it would just look pasty and unnatural.
