Funny and ridiculous as the article was in isolation, in context it's pretty depressing, as other articles make it clear that her husband and family emotionally abuse her and have normalized the abuse such that she internalized the beauty norms they've foisted on her.

Also depressing: the thousands of people who thought the relevant part of the article was not "Wow, looks aren't everything and you seem like a real asshole to everyone. That is probably why people don't like you." but instead "HAHA LOL U UGLY." Because thanks everyone, responding with gross insults about her looks is the appropriate response, because the article would be soooo different if she fit your standards of attractiveness. Not.

I don't think it would have mattered if she was considered above average in the looks department she still would have been shredded for being a woman admitting she thought she was attractive.

I have to agree, but I also think quite a few people read the article and wanted to tear her down for her attitude as well as her message. It wasn't just "oh, I'm so pretty" but "*sigh* being pretty is such a chore and no one can relate to me" along with the outrageous opener of complimentary champagne bottles from pilots.

I get that a lot of it had to do with what she said but people jumped on her appearance so quickly and with almost vicious glee instead of her message or attitude that it still really bothers me.

That whole thing depressed me as well. I felt the woman was fine, I mean yes she's not stunning, but she's pretty enough. I wish the reaction had been about her attitude, not about how hilarious it was that she's not pretty.
