ayrt

I've heard that she's said she wrote it because she and her husband were dabbling, and she liked it, or some such. And the thing is, it does read very much like someone's rape roleplay fantasy - her being a "good girl" and "clean" and "pure" and so on for not wanting it (Ana's a virgin at like 24 or something, and, rather more unbelievably, has never masturbated), and him showing her what she "really wants".

Which is great if that's what's been negotiated, but dammit, real life doesn't work like that.

...*side eyes* It's...not entirely unbelievable, y'know.

That said, the idea of being "shown what she really wants" makes me kind of want to vomit.

No, but it would be much more believable in, say, the 19th or 20th century, and not the 21st. She seems unaware that she possesses a vagina.

And, like Bella, I was under the impression that Ana was supposed to be a generic everywoman. Unless a lot less adult women masturbate than I previously thought, in which case I'm wrong.

The statistics I know, only 40% or so have ever tried to masturbate.

I would question that statistic. I think there are definitely a fair number of adult women who don't/haven't tried to masturbate, but I think there are a lot of women who have who just won't admit to it because they think it's something to be ashamed of.

I think it's less that she's a virgin who's never masturbated, and more that the narrative kind of put this forth as something that makes her good and awesome and superior. At least that was my feeling on it. I have a good friend in her 30s who is a virgin and very rarely masturbates, but it's because she just has a rather low libido and it doesn't do anything for her. But the way the book presents it with Anastasia, it's this really weird kind of Victorian ideal about a ~pure woman~ that led to her being all of these things, not just a lack of interest (although there is an argument for her just lacking knowledge, which isn't completely uncommon, but it's not really presented as no one told her and more that she didn't do it because it was wrong and icky and she needed the right person to ~teach her). And her friend in the book, who's pretty sexually active, pretty much gets the "lol what a slut" attitude. It's frustrating beyond belief.

So basically, it's a matter of both: A) Women are better people when they're virgins and B)Virgin needs to get schooled because she doesn't know what she likes.

Yeah. That's two big squicks right there.

And I get it. There's a massive difference between playing up what she's supposed to be as being an everywoman (and superior for it), and having a character who's a not-very-curious virgin at twenty-something because that's just the kind of person she is.

I'd actually kind of like to see the latter show up in fiction more often. But the 50 Shades M.O. is just...gross.

Yeah, it was pretty squicky all around. I totally agree on that the latter type of character is awesome to see in fiction! We could do with more variety in the ways that female sexuality is presented all around. :/

What's also annoying is that she keeps on being presented, by herself and others, as OMG SO PURE AND INNOCENT all the way through the smutty book

like

she keeps referring to herself as virginal and my immediate response is "Well, when do you stop being virginal, because I see no evidence of it?"

Re: NA

(Anonymous) 2012-11-09 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, right? You don't get to keep preaching about how your virginal and how much better that makes you than everyone else when you're no longer a virgin. Not that there's much excuse beforehand, but still. LOGIC.

It isn't that she's not allowed to be shy and feel inexperienced. It's that she keeps using the word "virgin" in reference to herself. Also she keeps being clueless about the fundamentals of BDSM, despite apparently spending hours researching it. Although that might be because she researched it by searching "submissive" on Wikipedia, which is... not a good way to research kink, most of that page isn't about BDSM at all.

also seriously after researching she can't work out what "suspension bondage" means

and then they keep talking about how smart she is

Not unlike the source material then, in which Meyer insists Bella is smart and well-read, when in fact she seems to have read six books total and failed to understand at least three of them.

No joke, Twilight lost me when supposed bookworm!Bella pulls out a collected works of Jane Austen as something she rereads often. Collected works are a nightmare to read, what with tiny print, millions of pages and the weight!

Seriously. I'm 30 and a virgin...

Virgin? Yes. Never masturbated? Seems rather unlikely to me.

(I speak as a virgin at 34, but masturbation? Umm... I think I figured that out at 11.)
