If the OP is trading on her looks to give her an edge, then she is getting that edge from people who put value judgements on looks. Duh.

The kind of environment that puts value judgements on a woman's looks is also the sort of place where she is less likely to be taken seriously. Because they know they hired her in part because she's pretty, not because of her talents.

It's a shame how many young, pretty girls don't realize this until it's too late. Then they end up just as bitter because no one will take them seriously, either.

Be pretty, get hired for being pretty and be dismissed for being pretty and without a brain in your head.

Be ugly, don't get hired for being ugly and be dismissed for being ugly and being hateful and bitter.

Women can't win.

Except for the fact that being pretty doesn't just magically disappear because you don't intend to use it. I'm not saying you should somehow explicitly trade on your looks for a job. But in some situations, being attractive just does give you (even a subtle) leg up. Not because you're trying, but because you're not going to actively try to make yourself not pretty for an interview, because that is stupid.

The system isn't fair, but you're (general you) just perpetuating it if you stand by dismissing someone because of their looks *either way.* That's all I'm trying to say. It's bullshit to be super concerned about all the women who are unattractive and find that a disadvantage and then turn around and gleefully, vindictively point at the woman who is attractive (or makes an effort) when she doesn't get taken seriously, through no fault of her own.
