Two of my most-used tags on my 50 Shades tumblr are "50 shades of sapphic love" and "50 shades of lesbian subtext". There is a reason for that. The reason is kind of linked to Anastasia constantly fawning over how hot/smart/badass/sexy/brave Kate is. And also to that one line where she called her Mistress.

I could totally see it working as a lesbian D/s relationship between the two of them. I mean, it would still be horribly written, but Christian is literally the person in that book who Anastasia has the LEAST chemistry with.
