Transformers can do it. You'll find a way.

Oops. Replied in wrong place. D'oh.

Re: Socio-economic Class

[personal profile] llei 2012-11-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have no clue. My mother was a teacher and my dad worked in a factory assembly line. Neither them or any of my grandparents had ever even considered university, but then very few in our town did. We lived in a two-up, two-down and my parents paid a longterm mortgage rather than rent. We never had foreign holidays or pocket money or anything. On the other hand, I went to dance lessons and at Christmas I always got a real Barbie, while some of my friends got cheaper imitation dolls, so relatively speaking we were the posh kids? I now have two higher degrees thanks to scholarships all the way, and am broke and unemployed. I don't know how you fit any of that into a proper bracket...

For me I think it's made a difference to the fandoms I've been in. All my fandoms have been for books or for shows that aired on my countries basic/free stations. I've never been in a fandom where the canon costs more than the price of a few paperbacks or (back in the day) video cassettes to tape it off the telly. And I've never bought any merch. But I don't feel I've particularly missed out?

Word.

Oh. Also - sometimes I've noticed that fans who are very thoughtful and eloquent about gender, race and sexuality can really fumble the ball on class. But that might just be 'cause I've gotten caught up in A Few Bad Wanks (tm) lately.

Mostly t-shirts with pretty and/or funny pictures/logos on them, comfy jeans and either tennis shoes or riding boots. Accessories-wise I usually wear a bright, rainbow-colored belt, a rainbow Pride wristband, a leather bracelet with a brass plate that has my horse's name on it and a hot-pink wristwatch. Basically I'm a walking rainbow.

Because Fran Kanz is amazingly adorkable? I've definitely had a bit of a crush on him since dollhouse. And for some reason, I have a weird fixation on his hands. They're... Hot? Elegant? I don't even know. But I like them.

1. This is the first K-Pop secret I've submitted.

2. Adult men telling teenaged girls to walk closer to them so they can hit them again is not the action of a person feeling powerless. It's the action of an abuser. He was/is/will continue to be, as long as he is famous, a victim of psychological abuse. He also was/is/shows no signs of having stopped being a man who uses his power over women (and yes, saesang fans are still women. Young, impressionable, deeply troubled women) to tell them to get closer to him so he can hit them again.

Jesus fuck, why do people insist on pretending that that is in any way okay.

Re: People fetishizing jobs

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
that is definitely crossing a line and I'm sorry, I don't have any advice but...why were you so vague in the original comment?

Okay guys, so I have a question--

I found this story on my hard drive that I'd had some ideas for, but eventually put on the back burner for reasons. Now I'm in a better position to get that realized, so I'd like your opinions on some of the ideas, like whether or not it sounds like something you would actually be interested in/read.

1.) Part of the format of the story is that it's cobbled together from several different sources. Some of it is from a story/screenplay, some of it is from a scholarly article, and some of it is like a diary/journal. Is this sort of thing interesting to you?

2.) I would like to actually have it look like each of these came from the source material. i.e.-- some of it in handwriting, some of it looking like it was pulled from an article database, some of it on scraps of paper like someone jotting down idea. Is this interesting to you, or is it too gimmicky?

Related to that last bit, if I were to do something like that, and wanted to try to get it digitalized, or represent it in a digital form, do you have any suggestions on how I would do that?

... And does anybody want to be my beta? I'd really appreciate another look at it. (It's not fic, it's original stuff.)

Embroidery! Specifically lace making!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hi! I need to get reasonably proficient at hand-stitched embroidery within three weeks. If possible, I'd like to be able to make respectable lace by then.

Can anyone point me to some really top-notch How To Learn Embroidery/Lace-Making resources and/or give me any helpful tips you wish someone else had pointed out when you were learning? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, I do have one specific question! Can I integrate objects into any kind of lace, or would that warp it? Should I attach them both to a stronger material instead?

Goddamn Viagra commercials and their highfalutin' euphemisms for not being able to get it up.

My fabulous hair. Right now it's short, spiky and blueish purple, but usually it's short, spiky and neon pink.

titilatingtom anon from last week

this secret ain't mine and I didn't post this!

Just because they're teenagers, doesn't mean it's illegal, depending on what country you're in. For most of us it's 16.

'Teenager' is really vague, hitting on 17/18 year old is legal and pretty normal in most places, while 13/14 is not okay and creepy.

Sounds like your friend is the jerk then. Keep telling her you are uncomfortable in talking about that and don't give her any leeway to continue a conversation. Hopefully she'll get the hint and stop bringing it up.

This.

He shouldn't have hit the fans, absolutely. But stalking IS abuse and Jaejoong gets them in armies.
fenm: Fish Eye from "Sailor Moon SuperS" (SH: Eyes)

[personal profile] fenm 2012-11-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
The father figure thing: BBC Holmes is younger than many versions, and the CBS version needs looking after. Plus, in other versions, Holmes and Watson had been together for some time, so their relationship was the primary one. In both the BBC and CBS versions, Lestrade/Gregson has known Holmes longer than Watson, so he's already used to dealing with him, while Watson is still learning how.

The love interest thing: While homoeroticism has been around as long as there have been people, it was not acceptable when the Holmes stories were written, and has only recently become widely acceptable in the mainstream media. Some of the other recent adaptations have delved into that aspect; but again, many of them had Holmes as Watson in an established relationship, so their relationship was the one people tended to focus on.

Ah, okay. I agree with what an anon said about 'getting creative'. Surely there's some way OP can bring the porn even if it's not in a traditional manner.

And that's sort of neat, actually. People are attracted to all kinds of things, so I imagine this particular character still has his fair share of fangirls/boys.

MAKE IT WORK.

Re: CLAMP Thread, Part VII

+1 for Sakura, and IMO it's because she's so normal it's boring. I think she'd be cute as a supporting character for something, but being the main character you have to watch her boring normalness all the damn time and it starts to actually get annoying.

Misaki from Angelic Layer is the same to an even greater extent. They're also not just the only CLAMP characters, but the only characters in anything that I feel this way about.

Oh, because I was just trying to point out that there were times, in general, that a person could have the 'wat' reaction to something like someone having a fetish for a job, not specifically my case ...And because I've found that people tend to be a little less reasonable when religion gets mentioned.
