Re: Writing something new?

Actually, I don't know if like/know of Xiaolin Showdown, but in that fandom, there was a decent following for a pairing of two villains.

One author made tooooons of stories for them:

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1075815/CrystallicSky

A good chunk of it is fluff, varying from "almost contrived" to "pretty decent" to "awww, that's so genuinely sweet!".

If you have the time, try reading the collections like Anthology of Love, (random word) of Chack, 33 Ways :Jack Could've Hooked Up With Chase: and the other collections.

Most of the collections have snippets or vignettes, fairly short stories, all-in-all, so you can look through them to see what kind of thing works and what doesn't. (If you're not familiar with the characters, I think that will help you even more to accurately gauge which ones are better written or have better premises.)

Also, the author improved with time, so the newer stories (imo, at least), have better characterization and see some improvement in the prose.

I hope this helps!

It's not something I do, but I tend to get a customer a week trying to use me as fap fodder. (24/7 callcentre for account dealings = people calling at 1am for your voice and asking about what you're wearing, hold old are you, your cupi size, where you live. I shut them down but they usually call back a few times before giving up)

What's even more annoying about #1 is that if the toy was cool enough and everyone liked it, somebody'll just try to find a way to bring it back anyway through a ridiculous deus ex machina or an alternate continuity or something, so trying to break your toy so nobody else can play with it is ultimately really pointless.

Shit Piss Fuck by Blink 182

I don't think I can get any more inappropriate than that. Funny, 'cause I don't even like some of the swearwords (swears should be like poetry and piss just doesn't ring with me)

Although Move Bitch! Gets in my head a lot.

Re: What are the hot animation fandoms right now?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
*can of worms*

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

You're gonna have to do some spectacular internet pirouettes to avoid the crazies, though.

(you might have better luck in tumblr or individual blogs of sane people, where you can at least follow whomever you want, than in sites like Equestria Daily and ponychan, which are more popular/open to general audiences, so, uh, yeah...)

I suggest you avoid the fanfiction/shipping, though, unless you have some serious experience in dealing with fandom/oversaturation/self-control and such. A damn slippery-slope, that one, if I've ever seen one.

Adventure Time seems to have a nice following too, but while it does have on-going character arcs and such, it's not terribly heavy on the plot.

I think the new Transformers series has it's fans and discussions too? (Neoyi on deviantART makes some fairly good reviews and such; actually, check her deviantART, she makes good reviews of a few other animated series, just not very often.)

Also, the forums at Something Awful tend to have fairly intelligent discussions and good moderation, so even lurking is entertaining:

Anime:

TV:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=130

The bad news, though, it's that you can only post if you're registered and that costs 10 USD (a one-time purchase unless you do something terrible and get banned).

Sometimes they let non-registered people read through the threads, but right now they're not visible. (They tend to vary it up, sometimes they are open a few weeks in a row, sometimes a day, etc.)

Re: Socio-economic Class

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Had to think about it, but I'm in the low income bracket for my country so that's low class?
I thankfully have a really good deal on rent + power/internet/gas so I can budget for fun things and save a bit on the side. Plus supporting only myself.

I tend not to be too aware of it in fandom. I don't go to cons or anything - expensive. I tend to just buy books, the occasional boxset and art books. I buy a new computer game every 4 - 8 months (I've got a friend who works at the store so I can get a discount).

Although, sometimes I do get a little jealous of people who can afford to fly across countries to events or buy the collectors editions of games I really enjoy...or buy games in the moment without any thought to "if I buy this game I don't care about will I be able to buy this game I really want later" or, comics are a major one actually. Comics and manga/anime, because they come in LOTS of little expensive packets instead of one giant collection that can be affordable with some saving up then you need the room to store all those books/dvds and I don't have that much room.

so I guess sometimes I wonder how I can be successful enough to get into middle income and have that kind of money security and house space.

Sorry that all sounds depressing. Applying to better jobs has been on my mind a lot as my current one is ruining my health, but I never seem to get past the interview stage.

Re: Embroidery! Specifically lace making!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Library, trust me. I work in one and I've seen 'How to do lace' type books as well as crafting info on our databases.

Also, I'm reasonably certain that you can add small things into lace IE seed beads and that sorta thing. But, I suspect it would be dependent on how delicate you want your lace to be. Even tiny little beads add weight. Then again, you may want the addition of a little bit of weight if you don't feel the lace is draping properly so YMMV.

Re: How long do you date

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
This is my biggest reason for being scared to date. What if I don't like them as much as they like me?

Re: How long do you date

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
It might be that you're just unusually upfront and honest. Sadly, a lot of people say (they want) one thing and then do the opposite, so a lot of people operate under the assumption that everyone else is lying.

So you say you're not that into them, but then date them? They think you're warming up or were just coy or maybe just unsure.

So I can see why they are surprised (especially if they're not good at reading more subtle cues that confirm that you're not that interested, which probably happens if they're in love/in lust and their mind is elsewhere or projecting what they want to see).

For me it'd be the "i'm not alone in this" factor.

Yeah, I'm ignoring that thread today. I'm not going to expand it. Good for them, but I don't want to be reminded of what I don't have.

Upper-middle class, but I tend to be extremely cheap and money-saving if I can. However, if there's an interesting book on the selling table, then all bets are off.

Can someone explain how this show is still relevant? Like, at all?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's on TV and people watch it? If shows had to hit a certain mark on the relevant-o-meter ("relevant" criteria to be determined by an impartial panel, of course), there'd be almost nothing left.

Re: Multi-media writing

[personal profile] al28894 2012-11-10 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, what you're talking about is the "Epistolary Novel" style, in which the story is cobbled together from different materials and media.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epistolary_novel

I think it sounds interesting. Go for it!

really cool fem!Harry Potter fic

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I found this really well-written, often-updated fanfiction starring a gender-flipper Harry Potter and so far it's been amazing and it needs more reviews like right now.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8615605/1/The-Never-ending-Road

(the end-game is Harry/Snape, BUT, they author makes it very clear that that won't happen until waaay down the road and not any time soon, so right now it's just incredibly good gen-fic)

I'm genuinely surprised by the characterizations of pretty much everyone. Dumbledore is intelligent but fallible, good-intentioned but humanly flawed, Snape is full of loathing towards himself and others, and guided by that loathing plus a heaping of regret and acidic bitterness that corrupts everything he says and does, Harriet (Harry) is a very believable female version of Harry, and even the secondary characters are given their moments without hogging the spotlight and without being rudimentary.

Also, the story just jumps into the start of the equivalent of Chamber of Secrets, so you see the backstory through glimpses and interactions instead of the same old canon-rehash with the Dursleys and the shopping and the Sorting and so on.

(Most impressively, the author seems to be avoiding changes for the sake of changes, but also a canon-rehash. Honestly, I was sold on the characterization, prose and pacing alone; that the plot is taking its own voice is just the icing on the cake.)

That's it exactly! Augh, I learned that term when I was in college reading about Dracula, and I was trying to come up with it earlier, but all I was getting was "Epistemological". Which, yeah. Not the same thing. :D

Thanks!
