You are right OP. I've seen Skyfall, and seen most Bond films. It's part of the character. I really have no idea how that could ever change and still be James Bond. I think the best that could happen is as you say, more of an acknowledgment of it inverse. Which in fact is done in Skyfall as well, by both M and by another character whose name is a spoiler for the film, but she's great.
