I don't understand why EVERY adaptation of Sherlock Holmes has Irene Adler as such a prominent character. She was in ONE STORY! And yes, before you ask, I have the same problem with Moriarty always being the main villain. (Personally, I thought Milverton was a much better villain for a story arc.)

Because LOVE INTEREST! Every character must have a LOVE INTEREST! To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman!

Yes, it annoys me too, can you tell? Actually, it doesn't even annoy me that much that she's in all the adaptations as a prominent character, because I think she's awesome, and if she could get a decent adaptation that wasn't 'Sherlock's long lost love' or 'supervillain', I would welcome that with open arms.

Oh, this! I don't mind Sherlock having a love interest or Irene being that love interest but "long lost love" thing annoys me too, as well as love at first sight. I wouldn't mind if someone did a love story with them, but in a new way or at least closer to canon, where Irene had a husband and wasn't interested in Sherlock..

I know! I watched the BBC Sherlock and thought I'd give the stories another go (I've always found the stories dry which is why it took me so long to bother with any adaptation of Sherlock). I picked up A Scandal in Bohemia, read it, and called my friend with the exclamation, "THAT'S IT?!"

Since I'm not a book!Sherlock fan, I don't mind her showing up, but I kind of wished she'd not made it at the end of the BBC version.. I'm okay if she never comes back. I like my asexual Sherlock just fine.

"THAT'S IT?!" sums up my reaction to her story, too.

I guess it must've been a big deal that ACD actually wrote about a woman who managed to outsmart Holmes, but I dunno. Of course, it was also the first Sherlock Holmes story I ever read, so I think I might have been expecting something a big more exciting than his usual little short stories given her reputation.

Exactly!

(Personally, I thought Milverton was a much better villain for a story arc.)

On that note, I think Violet Hunter from "Copper Beeches" would be a great female character to be adapted (and the story she's in is great, too). But, no, let's keep going back to the same two characters over and over (and throw in "Hounds" for variety) and just act like the 57 other stories that didn't feature Adler or Moriarty don't even exist!

YES on Violet Hunter.

I know!

And sadly, I'm betting no one but canon Holmes fans (and maybe people who caught the Granada version) even know who we're talking about, Which is kinda my point.

*raises hand* Granada fan here. And yes, perfect idea, if only it would happen!

If Moriarty hadn't been the main villain the story that was supposed to kill Sherlock Holmes off for good, I don't think he would've invaded the public consciousness quite so thoroughly because he really wasn't that interesting. And let's not even get into how badly modern adaptations butcher Irene and turn her into a sexist caricature of herself.

And Copper Beeches! My goddess, that story actually gave me nightmares when I first read it as a child. Waay creepier than Hound, to me at least.

Yeah, I get why Moriarty is often made the Big Bad, but.. Honestly, I sometimes wonder if people who adapt Sherlock Holmes ever bother to read the stories. There are plenty of other cool villains.

The cool thing about Beeches is that it could be adapted pretty easily without much change. Even with cellphones and the like. I mean, even if Violet could sent a text saying she was in danger, it's not much help if noone can get out to the house in time to save her...

Oh, man, "Copper Beeches." That's a freaking classic. Why hasn't anyone used that story? Or Violent Hunter, if you need a female character who doesn't take any shit

now I'm depressed about Sherlock Holmes adaptations

Actually, Granada's version is lovely, so if you can get a hold of it, it might make you feel less depressed. (-:

Milverton and Violet Hunter are my two favorite characters in Holmes canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Even with our 21st century standard Violet Hunter is an AMAZING female character! In fact, she's even more independent and smart than most female characters nowadays...

[personal profile] fenm 2012-11-10 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed!

Hell, I think the same thing about canon!Irene, really, but so many adaptations fuck her characterization up...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It is a damn shame, yeah. But I think it's a consequence of the fact that every Holmes adaptation now feels a deep and abiding need to be serialized (why, God only knows; it certainly wasn't a characteristic of the original stories). And that demands certain things - it demands a villain (and to have anyone but Moriarty as the main villain would be strange, since there's so little serialization and no other villains who have the status of standing outside of a single case in the way Moriarty does) (even though he's only really in one case).

The Irene Adler thing is less comprehensible. I think it's because - you start out with a few things using her as an important character, and then she becomes a character that the general public is extremely familiar with, and it makes it easier to include her. You know, a bit of a reinforcing loop kind of thing.

I've always liked the Holmesian theory that Milverton was one of Moriarty's pawns, and that Holmes' defeat (such as it was) of Milverton was one of the things which led to the final clash between Holmes and Moriarty. And it does make me wonder why no one has taken that concept up, even in the context of a Moriarty storyline.

Or any of the other excellent Holmes stories that never really get adapted. Now I'm getting all worked up about this.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
There's a theory that Rat, Wedding and Bow are simply words included in "The Adventures of Charles Augustus Milverton", so a Milverton story arc might be happening in Sherlock.
