Bond's first...what exactly? Is this implying that Bond has had sex with a man? Because OP is saying the villains sexuality is used to make him creepy, but if Bond has (willingly) had sex with a man before or is possibly bi, I guess that balances the scales a (tiny) bit. (That isn't what OP is saying right? That sounds too good to be true tbh...)

Haven't seen this yet but I really, really want to.

Should probably see the second one first, right? ...Yea.

...or, yanno, Bond has been raped by a man before :/

ouch, I hadn't though about that ._.

Well the way I interpreted OP's phrasing was that Bond's indifference is hot to her, so...I wouldn't have connected being raped to that. I sure hope that's not what the movie was trying to convey...

I don't remember the actual dialogue so don't take my word for this, but iirc that was referring to the fact that Bond had had other men coming onto him, so Silva wasn't the first (Silva's behaviour towards him was really, REALLY suggestive). I actually can't remember if the context seemed to imply the fact that Bond himself had any kind of sexual encounter with men, though. At first I'd interpreted it as "omg Bond is bi?!! *_*" too, but then someone referenced this trope --> http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GayBravado and I kind of cried a little inside :|

Oh, this makes sense. Too much sense honestly, because I was all for Bond being bi. I'll just wait and see, I guess.

I think most of the Bond films are pretty standalone. Quantum of Solace is the only one that I know was supposed to directly follow another film (Casino Royale), and QoS was regarded as being pretty meh in comparison to CR. I couldn't even watch it because of all of the awful, close-up shaky cam fight shots. Holy motion sickness, Batman.

Ah, that's terrible! I thankfully don't have that issue, but haven't watched it regardless. Loved Casino Royale but I started Quantum, wasn't feeling it (missed Eva Green too) and just never went back to it. I'll try to watch it anyway before Skyfall (for the pretty) but it's nice knowing that even if I don't get around to it that I should be okay.

That was also how I felt! I just couldn't get in to QoS so I just kind of gave up after all of the shaky cam. I was missing Mads Mikkelsen, too.
That's the problem though, it's not even very pretty to watch. :C The filming is so different from CR that it's just a big letdown.

I'm thinking I might just watch CR again tonight, since I'm going to see Skyfall tomorrow!

It's not even PRETTY?! How can you have Daniel Craig in a suit shooting people and it not be pretty? God, what is this movie?

CR was brilliant, so I encourage it! And have fun with Skyfall! /jealous

There are so many better, prettier Craig movies you could be watching though! That's why it's not worth it.

Uh...any suggestions? (Don't go to a lot of trouble, but if you can think of any off the top of your head...)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Enduring Love, The Mother... all I got off hand, but I'm sure there are a lot of others..

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
When I saw the film I took it to mean Bond had sex with men before. It certainly is played that way. He's being all Bondish and very cool, and not bothered at all by Bardem caressing him and coming on to him. Then Bardem says something about how it will be Bond's first time and he just raises his eyebrow and says what makes you think it will be my first time? The whole cinema laughed, it was great! Kind of old fashioned Bond, making jokes when the situation seems hopeless.

Don't bother with Quantum of Solace, it's awful. Skyfall is fab.

Quantum isn't even worth it for the pretty? I DID start it but quickly got bored and distracted and never went back. I was thinking of trying to watch it again. Glad you seem to love Skyfall so much! The trailers look UNF.

Oh god, I hope you're right because that's BEAUTIFUL. -new head-canon accepted- I never would've expected a joke with implications like that in a Bond movie, so this makes me twice as excited.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT, yes the scene is totally played out like that. Bear in mind that Bardem is an uber Bond villain, he's horrible. Although with a great back story and motivations that really make sense as to how he got the way he was. So it's not like Bond is likely to be attracted to him as such, and the dynamic is more a brother thing with M being their mother if anything.

I can see why the person made it a secret, because you do feel bad as it's non consensual groping! But it does have that homoerotic thing going on.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
You really don't have to have seen the Quantum of Solace. I would say that someone who'd never seen *any* Bond film before would not get as much from Skyfall as someone familiar with the tropes of the franchise, but there is nothing plotwise that carries over directly from QoS aside from the characters of Bond and M.

And it's a very very good film, whereas QoS wasn't.

And it's a very very good film, whereas QoS wasn't.

That seems to be the consensus! Glad to hear it in case I don't see QoS. I don't like to miss anything plot wise, but it sounds like that's not an issue.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you know the old Bond films then it helps with Skyfall, but it's not essential, more just that there are references and jokes that make more sense. Plot wise, it's standalone so it doesn't matter.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-10 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT I've seen pretty much every Bond film as far as I can remember... but I think if you know Bond, even just from say Brosnan, Connery and Moore then Skyfall works really well. In fact the older ones may even be more important to get the jokes... and that lovely car!!

I just think Quantum of Solace is so bad it's not worth it, I've forgotten most of it and it didn't matter. .
