Thanks, I'll save this thread. I'm always looking for new things to read and recs I find are the best way (rather than browsing ffnet and hoping it won't be boring or badly written)

While you're in the recommendation mood, know any longish fics where Snape is mean/a killer and struggles with that?

Apparently I'm in the mood for "people who are okay with doing bad things but won't do it to please other people and have to fight themselves to not hurt others"

re: The Never Ending Road. I appreciate that Harriet isn't an empty headed Marysue. I'm liking her more than Harry at this rate.

Ah, I know what you mean about recommendations and testing one's time and patience in the hopes of lucking out in ff dot net!

(I actually found Never-ending Road by taking the plunge, searchingg for Harry & Snape stories and trying not to cringe too much. It was in the first page and I was all like, "yeah, score! :D")

I haven't read many Snape-centric fics, sorry (besides some random old shipping fics that probably weren't very memorable because I only remember them vaguely), but one I can think of is where he is a bit of a secondary character is in a epic dramatic Harry/Draco series:

Harry is the main character, but I think, second to him, Snape and Draco get the most development, and Snape comes from a pretty dark place.

It does take a few stories to get into the real character-centric stuff; the first ones are more around Harry.

When I say epic I mean that it's very long, it updated nearly every day (!), it's complete, and the author went all out in world-building and characterization.

So, if you can put up with Harry and his angst for a few good Snape moments and interactions, there is that?

I'm up to date and now I'm waiting for the next chapter (my patience will be tried!)

I LOVE long. Epic is great! I normally filter things to 80k and above with a preference for 200k and over. Which means I miss a lot of upcoming new fics until there's a lot of chapters or recommended to me.

You managed to tick off everything on my want list

- world building
-dark places
-complete
-characterisation

Generally not keen on HPDM but I'll read it if the story is good. So far it's promising.

This is why I love the speedy updates! I hope the author doesn't burn out.

I am usually the same way, but I kind of run out of long!fic (unless I find something unexpectedly buried I hadn't noticed), so now I settle for whatever seems even remotely interesting, sometimes even abandoned stuff. orz

I'm really glad that I found something that sounds so promising to you!

Other things you can expect:

-An expanded magical system that is genuinely well thought out, exciting and doesn't contradict canon (as far as I remember, it's been a while)
-Exciting fight scenes
-Political intrigues that aren't boring or "lol harry pwns all everyone else is an idiot"
-The fic starts fairly similar to canon in the first "book", where it's laying all its foundations, but it diverges in the second book and it all gets progressively different from there.
-Probably the best well-written OCs I've ever seen in any fanfic. They're introduced in natural ways, they are all distinct, and neither are mary sues nor shoe-horned into the story.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do have criticisms:

-I think some of the characters (no spoilers) were villainized in a way that serves drama and angst rather than their canon characters, and while it works within the context of the story and the way magic works in it, I wish the author hadn't taken those routes with them. I'll give the author credit for updating at such a frenetic pace and still working such an awesome plot and general good writing, but I still think they took some shortcuts with them.

(To balance it out, at least most characters had believable strengths and weaknesses, both physically and emotionally. Nobody is perfect and actions have consequences.)

-Some plot and character arcs are dragged and dragged and dragged (especially for the sake of drama). Honestly, if the story wasn't so well-written, I would have given up on it. It's the kind of writing and plot that makes you want to keep reading any way, despite of the flaws.

(It took me several weeks of reading too. Seriously, this one will last you a good long while. Just like we like our fics, right? ;D)
