This sort of thing does happen though, probably in most fandoms, but sometimes it's just a couple of people being dickish. I'm not sure if the majority of the RE fandom acts this way or not, so I can't comment.

I can assure you, it does happen in fandoms outside RE. Though to be honest, I haven't been very active all that much in RE's fandom to witness it first hand. I do have a decent enough idea of what it looks like. It's in these tedious circles that all fandoms seem to run in and overlap with each other. Scary in that regard, to be honest.
