I made this reply to another comment, that this makes sense and speaks for the vast majority, but it doesn't work for everybody. I personally have never had any desire for sex or intimacy of that kind, so her comment doesn't work for me.

I'd say it's not the virginity itself that's impractical. What can be extremely impractical, for the reasons you mentioned, is getting rid of the virginity if you want to do so when you're already at an age where inexperience is generally viewed as a turn-off rather than the expected state of affairs or even a turn-on.

Like, I'm pretty much resigned to never having a sex life beyond maybe the odd drunken fumble, because I'm not interested in a serious relationship and casual sex isn't really feasible when you're 25 (and getting older every day) with no idea what you're doing. It wasn't getting to this point that was impractical, it's changing the situation now that it exists that's the problem.
