Man, I wish I could say 'Yeah, I love it when characters are revealed to be Muslim, too!' but that hasn't happened yet, except where it's a plot point. Yay under-representation?
brightblueink: Fiore from Chrono Crusade activating her powers (LADEN!)

...I was just about to mention a few examples I've seen but the religion was definitely always a plot point, so...yeah. =\ That sucks.

Aw, that's too bad. There should be more Muslim characters! I mean, it's only one of the largest religions in the world.

Little Mosque on the Prairie? It's sort of a plot point there but said plot point is one of the main focuses of the show at least.

There's an episode of Doctor Who featuring a Muslim character. Her religion is only a plot point in that it's something she has faith in (and all of the characters in that episode have something they believe strongly in, whether it be religion or chance or conspiracies). She's a fantastic character, too.

Abed, probably the most popular character, from Community is Muslim, and it's not a plot point.

Although, one of the ongoing plot points is how everyone in the ensemble cast has a different set of beliefs and backgrounds (atheist, agnostic, christian, jehovah's witness, cult, and so on...). If anything, it's the Christian character that seems to constantly have to overcome her religious intolerance (when it's not only being played for laughs).
brightblueink: Autor from Princess Tutu pushing glasses up his nose. (Scary shiny glasses)

I can't believe I forgot about Abed.

Captain Britain and M13

Has Fazia Hussein, British citizen of middle eastern descent, Muslim, and ends up the current wielder of Excalibur.

If it makes you feel better, making someone an atheist is usually a "now we can debate religion/show how soulless and empty atheists are/pontificate at length about the writer's beliefs" plot point as well.

Sayid Jarrah (LOST) was Muslim, and even though everyone's backstory (and beliefs and family and etc) became a plot point, at least he wasn't singled out. Like Community, this show's Christian characters get the Plot Point Faith Treatment though (aargh Mr. Eko you were so underused and then *spoiler* happened for no apparent reason!)

Thanks to everyone for the examples I've missed, although I'd also like to say that when a Muslim character is shown who doesn't care about covering her aurah, I don't count them as Muslim either. Uh, no offense to those non-practicing Muslims who don't ofc. Most of the time, I feel that those characters who are Muslim but break some kind of Muslim law was really bad research on the writer's part.

Oh, there was also Nasir and Azim from their respective Robin Hood interpretations, but they broke Islamic law way bigger time than not covering their knees.

How are you defining awrah, though?

(I'm genuinely curious; IIRC, it varies from region to region, and not everyone's sure if, for instance, it includes the hands.)

Well the Quran says that women should cover everything except for her face and hands in public, and to relatives who are not directly hers, and men should cover from the navel to below the knees.

Does it vary? Man, idk, I just do what the Quran and hadeeth tell me to do. I know some people say the feet aren't aurah but what's important for me is that women cover their heads and bodies and men are properly attired.
