I don't really get why you feel this way... More fic and art sounds better to me, and you have more people to gush over your pairing with. Is there a specific reason? Just curious.

I guess it has to do with something about being ~different~ and ~not like those other shippers~. People like to feel special and complain about not having enough fanworks.

Oh man, I've been in that situation and I would always take more fanworks. Always! That can't be the real reason...right?

They probably just like the feeling of being in a smaller, more intimate subsection of fandom.

Maybe, yea. I think having more fanworks would be worth losing that more intimate feel, but that's just me.

Yeah, I dunno how I feel about it cause I'm kind of in the middle but I guess the OP can't really help it. They're probably just not used to liking something so popular and feel nostalgic about it.

Seconding the above anon about liking the intimate feel.

Another thing, is that in some fandoms, the mainstream fans get bad reps because the loudest ones tend to also be the most obnoxious ones. It gets a little embarrassing to say you like that ship, because others will assume you're just as crazy. That and, the extreme fans scare you too, which is odd if you're used to bonding with everyone that ships your rarepair. Then again, I'm not sure how much this would apply in this case, since I'm not in the fandom.

This answer makes the most sense to me, especially since you mentioned mainstream fans; in larger fandoms that would be completely understandable. Even in the cases that I have shipped rare pairings, I don't think I've ever bonded with all the other rarepair fans, so that might be why I have difficulty imagining that making such a big difference. I can see it now, though.

I can't speak for the OP, but I know in my case I would hate if any of my pairings were one of the popular ones in my fandom. I develop very specific headcanons for the pairings I enjoy and the more people I run up against who have different and conflicting headcanons the more aggravated I get.
