I often have the opposite problem, with kids being oddly wise beyond their years. It's a hard sweet spot to his if you don't spend a lot of time around them to really nail their ages I think.

AYRT

I agree about the kids being oddly wise thing, too. I can handle that slightly better than the dumbing down, but it's still pretty annoying. Especially when the kid is the awesomest, smartest, most perfect kid ever and never does anything annoying or bad or realistically kid-like. It's like the ultimate Mary Sue.

This is hands down my biggest pet peeve with kid fic.

It drives me nuts when people write two-year-olds with the mind of a six- or seven-year-old (if not older sometimes), able to speak complete complex sentences and process thoughts far beyond their years.

I get that some people just haven't been around children enough, but good lord.

on the flip side, I work with two-year-olds and I have hilarious rage issues when people write them as babies who say "goo goo gaa gaa!"

Yeah, I hear you on that one too. I've just seen people write kids as far smarter than their age more often.

Regarding your hilarious rage issues, though, I know exactly what you mean. I've also worked with kids a lot (I worked as a full-time nanny throughout high school and college, and then I worked for a hotel as their in-house nanny following graduation), and I think I tend to get more annoyed by this kind of thing more than maybe the normal person would.

It's just that it's not that hard to do a little research about child development...
