Acronyms and their meanings

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
N!S: not!secret (usually something that the person would not be ashamed to admit to their grandmother/mother/fandom friends/RL friends)

S: secret (the... well, duh)

B!S: bonus!secret (it's not the point of the secret, but it's related and might make the original secret even more humiliating/un-share-able. basically 2-for-1)

S!B: secret!because (because... they feel like they're alone, their sexuality doesn't match, there's some particular aspect of the secret that makes it a secret - usually used when the secret could otherwise be said to be a popular opinion or at least not something that should be hidden for whatever reason.)

AYRT: Anon You Replied To. Used to distinguish between anonymous users (anons).

DA: Different Anon (than the one you replied to). Someone is butting in on the conversation.

SA: Same Anon. This is different than AYRT in that ayrt is meant to carry on a conversation, while SA is meant to fix something in the previous comment, usually when it's not immediately apparent that it's a typo. Like the canon/not canon person in the Doctor Who secret (17 I think).

And some extras:

OC: Original Character. Usually used to denote a character in fanfic that is not from canon.

OOC: Out-of-Character. This has two meanings. One is in fanfic, where if, say, the Joker professes his undying love for Batman and they ride off into the sunset (which is a great set-up for the Joker to do something awful, but...). If Batsy doesn't say a damn word in protest, that's OOC. (The Joker doing the undying-love thing, I could see, but only if the punchline was fantastic.) The other meaning is in RP (role-play), when the players are talking to each other out of character - they aren't acting. Both definitions go opposite....

IC: In-Character. If the Joker professes his undying love for Batman, and Batman immediately knocks him out, ties him up, leaves him on GCPD's doorstep and goes on the hunt for whatever plot the Joker's cooked up this time that requires him to say such things, that's IC. In RP, is means that you're speaking to the character, not the player, and you shouldn't be alarmed if the person suddenly says they want to play your bones like a fiddle.

TLDR (or variations thereof): Too Long, Didn't Read. If someone posts an essay like I'm doing now, the readers are likely to say "This was too long, I didn't read it." The phrase is now shorthand for, "Let me sum up what I've just said for all you lazy asses." It's often used in wall-o'-text secrets.

IRL: In Real Life, as in not on the internet or in fiction. Used more or less interchangeably with AFK (away from keyboard).

That's all I can think of. Anything I didn't get?

sa

Whoops, I lied. The canon/not canon thing is from the discussion of the Sherlock secret. On the other hand, both involve Steven Moffat, so I'm not totally crazy.

sa again

Two more:

NS: not secret. This is used in the failbar, below, to denote things that aren't a secret, basically things that aren't phrased as opinions. Like, "Gay people have rainbows coming out of every orifice in their bodies!" is a phrase that, while I do have a funny story about it, it is not a secret. On the other hand, "This show convinced me that gay people are made of rainbows and will set your hair on fire!" is a secret. Or at least an opinion, however wrong.

NF: not fandom. "This show is the greatest!" is fandom. "These two seagulls are the greatest!" is not.

"This show is the greatest!" is fandom. "These two seagulls are the greatest!" is not.

Hey hey, what if the two seagulls in question are members of A Flock of Seagulls?

OTT: Over the Top

IIRC: If I Remember Correctly

NGL: Not gonna lie

TBH: To be honest

LBR: Let's be real

... and that's all I can think of atm.

Oh wait, ATM: at the moment.
cloud_riven: A doodle of Darkwing Duck with a finger raised! (for the record i am the best)

da oh wait i'm not anon oops. i just wanted to add some :(

IMO: in my opinion. imo, you're all mostly dandy some of the time ♥ (imho, when you have a humble opinion)

MTE: my thoughts exactly! an alternative to thissing all the comments! Yay!

HTH: hope that helps. just like i hope these acronyms do. hth :D

FTFY: Lemme just quote your comment, adjust it a bit so you end up saying something completely different, and now I've just fixed that for you ;)

GDI: GOD DAMN IT. thinking up acronyms is hard

FTR: for the record, i'm mostly thinking of the ones I usually use tbh

Have some SJ-flavoured ones!

SJ: social justice. Can be matters ranging from awareness of feminist issues, racism, ableism, folk's triggers, other -isms, etc.

SJW: social justice warrior, who is basically an OTT asshole who probably makes the case for folk who lay down the tone argument. It's like "feminazi", minus the godwinning, and usable just about anywhere.

PC: political correctness

PoC: Person of colour! Swap the 'P' for a 'W' or 'C' for woman/character of colour!

TW: outside of discussions regarding the popular MTV series, Teen Wolf, you're most like to see this preceding a trigger warning of sorts. Like, "TW: child abuse"

And I'm betting someone already beat me to most or all of these.

IA: I agree

RN: right now

OP: original poster (like, original poster of a secret or the person who started a first-level subthread in the general comments thread)

JFC: Jesus-fucking-Christ

ITT: in this thread

YANA: you are not alone

IAWTC: I agree with this comment

Because TL;DR can be read out loud as teal deer, sometimes it is replaced by a picture of a teal deer.

The word "fuck" or "fucking" can be used to modify some common phrase and their abbrevations, so

MTE => MFTE (my fucking thoughts exactly)
GDI => GFDI (God fucking damn it!)
IAWTC => IAWTCSFM (I agree with this comment so fucking much)

There are more but I can't think of any more right now.

I see sfm as a standalone a lot too.

There's also attmo (...and then they made out).
randomling: Amy Pond (of Doctor Who) looking up into light. (amy)

Anon, you win. I'm new here, and I might have to print out that comment and pin it to the wall. :D

Thanks!

tbph - to be perfectly honest or
tbqh - to be quite honest

I sometimes use IME for "in my estimation".

AFAIK - as far as I know

IKR - I know, right?

wtg or w2g - way to go

ot3 - I think these three people should make out
