I tend to stick to the sidelines, so I haven't had any personal experiences in fandom that are awful. I was involved in a relatively small RPF fandom at one point, though, and some of the people in it were just vicious. There was one girl who was a well-known fic writer for a particular pairing, and a rumor (there was never even any actual proof) got started at one point that she was dating one of the dudes in said pairing. It ended up with people doing shit like posting her f-locked entries and hunting down her facebook and posting personal pictures of her on a hate meme. Someone even posted her full name and address and there were a few people threatening to go to her home. I don't think anyone actually did, but she did receive some hate mail. It ended up with her basically withdrawing and deleting any and all online fandom presence, and there were quite a few other people in the fandom who left because that shit was just way too crazy.
