Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-16 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
So F!S...do you believe in them? There's been a few in the news lately and none of them seems like anything alien to me. I can understand why people are obsessed with the idea (Who wants to be alone in the universe?) but come on. Even the most famous Roswell photos to me look like nothing more than weather balloon debris. (For metal that "never lost its shape" the photo shows a ton of bent and crumbled metalic pieces!)

Well, I believe that there can be flying objects that aren't identified, but I don't believe they're necessarily aliens.

As a kid I was TERRIFIED at the notion that they were really aliens though.

I'd like to think that there's life elsewhere in the universe, but if there is and they're actually advanced enough to have space travel, I don't know why in the world they'd be interested in spying on us.

The same reason people go to movies: voyeurism.

A little grey holding a box of tissues and a small bottle of lotion, hovering in a flying saucer right outside your window.

I guess as planets go, we'd probably be the equivalent of a Jersey Shore or Real Housewives marathon, so I can see it.

No chances are we haven't seen any real aliens yet. But it's fun to think about.

The most recent one was pretty bad. It was just a bunch of insects flying across the screen.

My dad told me in all seriousness about a time when he was in his early teens that he actually saw not only a UFO, but shortly after, something that sure sounds like one of the typical aliens people refer to as the Grays. My dad's not inclined to wild imaginings, hallucinations, or making crap up just to mess with me, so I'm inclined to believe him.

However, the vast majority of the things people see are not alien spacecraft. I admit that I'm pretty much Fox Mulder when it comes to UFO reports, and always want to investigate and get all hopeful, but bottom line? You know that show "Ancient Aliens", where they pretty much blame everything that ever happened throughout history on aliens? Uh, no.

I hate that show. Humans back then were not that simple minded. They created amazing things, much of which was lost to history until pretty recently. (Indoor plumbing! Gears! Magnet robots! and whatnot)

Yeah, at first I was excited about the show. Showcasing some of the historical evidence for alien visitation during times when no one would have realized that was what they were seeing? Fascinating idea!

And then they basically turn it into "aliens are responsible for everything humanity has ever done" and just... bleh. No. Humans may not be capable (yet!) of traveling to other planets, but we're still pretty darned good at figuring stuff out and inventing ways to do things ourselves.

Ancient Aliens, I have such a love hate relationship with that show. On one side the entire theory is a blatant insult to human intelligence, ingenuity, and imagination. On the other, the more they talk the more ridiculous they look, I mean apparently Leonardo da Vinci is a Time Lord.

Life existing somewhere else, yes. Said life going on a billion mile cruise to visit us to do who-knows-what? NO.

I'm a sceptic - which is to say, when I come across reports of sightings which are not just blatant weather balloons/planes/whatever, I find them absolutely fascinating. Of the various unexplained phenomena I find UFOs one of the more plausible ones.

I was actually just thinking about this the other day, cause I remember watching a really fascinating documentary about a genuinely unexplained flying object when I was a kid but I have forgotten all the Googleable details except that it was some time during the Cold War and there was a metric shitload of sightings during the Cold War. :( Will see if I can track it down.
