There are mods to remove the spiders from a lot of games, OP. The very first mod I got for Skyrim was one that changed the spiders into rats. God, those spiders were creepy as fuck.

Just wanted to second this, yeah. Some of them are kind of imperfect—there's one for DA2 that replaces all the spiders with mabari, but they still make spider noises, etc.—but it still makes it a bit easier if your main issue is SEEING SPIDERS AAAUGH.

I'm arachnophobic, but somehow it makes fighting and killing huge fictional spiders extra-rewarding instead of "oh god can't handle it", so most of the time I actually prefer spider-enemies to dog-enemies.

…except for Resident Evil spiders. And the ones in Penumbra. Penumbra spiders can go die in a fire.

Wait so sometimes when you're in a cave, giant rats will fall from the ceiling?

Cool.

The spider in your secret is the cutest spider ever.

A week ago, I'd have read this secret and think, yeah, I really dislike spiders in my games, but I can play them just fine. Then I tried to play Limbo and those spiders gave me a mini panic attack. I couldn't play. That had never happened before, and I'm not actually scared of real life spiders and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. So yeah, I feel you, OP.

Optical Illusion

Every time I paged down past this secret I thought I saw the tears or the heart move so I'd go back up and watch it for a bit, then page back down and see it again and jerk the page back up. It isn't actually moving, right?

That's gotta be rough OP. Maybe check for mods (like illiadandoddity suggested) before buying or playing a game?

So many games have surprise spiders too, so I can see where that might be a problem...

That's because the spiders in Minecraft are terrifying D: There's been plenty of times where they just leap out of the darkness with the scary noises they make and augh.....I don't want to think about it.

I don't mind creepy crawlies, but it bothers me if I have to actually kill real-looking animals in games. Like wolves. Especially if they make sad puppy noises when they're wounded :(

Are you my brother? He used to refuse to finish games (I think he still does at times) if there were arachnid baddies, regardless of how pixelated/cartoony they were.

The spiders in minecraft are even worse now because they make icky TICKYTACKNOISES when they walk AUGH.

[identity profile] ayarane.livejournal.com 2012-11-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Blizzard is notorious for peppering spider-based quests in their games just to put spiders in there. Sometimes there's legitimate reasons (like in WoW, sometimes the quest has you gathering spider parts to make antidotes, silk or even for cooking) but much of the time I'm convinced it's all just to get a rise out of us arachnophobes. >_>;

City of Heroes' had Arachnos. The foot soldiers and ranks were named after spider types. This was more tolerable than actual spiders because the armor types for some of the soldiers, and the robots were more abstractions of spiders, but... yeah. SPIDERS. Ick.

I feel the same way but about having levels where you have to go inside living things.

Of course, because I love the games so much I soldier through it. So I guess that's two differences.

I hope you find a way to get past the spider thing OP, whether it's due to mods or your own stubbornness.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I have this problem as well. With some games I can handle it(Warcraft and any other cartoony game) but for both DragonAge and Skyrim they were just too detailed for me to be able to handle. I also play most of my games on the PS3 as well so modding options aren't available to me.

Maybe this seven-legged cartoon spider will cheer you up?

For some reason Skyrim is about the only game where I can handle the spiders (probably because I can set them on fire), but even then sometimes I have to close my eyes and button-mash. Brrr.

I just started playing the Legend of Grimlock and the spiders are the most terrifying game spiders I've ever come across. They make this horrible screechy spider noise and jump on you and they're near-impossible to dodge because they move so fast.

Um, so avoid that one, OP.

I just really wanted to let you know that the stick person and happy spider doodle is super cute ♥

also, same. i'm scared of everything implied to be scary in video games because i'm a scaredy cat, but SAME nonetheless.

SPIDERS UGH.
Weird thing is I can deal with spiders in warcraft pretty easy. not really a problem.
But the Chamber Of Secrets computer game?
holy shit when you had to go fight aragog.
I literally screamed the entire time. IT WAS FUCKING HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE.
DON'T PLAY THE HARRY POTTER 2 PC GAME OK

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
I can't handle large detailed spiders, small ones are fine.
This is the main reason I'm holding off on Skyrim. But the possibility of modding the PC copy is comforting to me. Maybe I'll try that.
I also bought Dragon Age 2, only to learn that there are so many spider enemies in it. Ugh!
I hope the developers chill out with all the damn spiders.
