Where I live It's pretty normal to see land-rovers or any kind of 4x4 used just for getting around. I think that's the same in most rural areas of the UK. They're not considered cool at all, pretty much the opposite.

The back streets I live on don't get gritted at all. When it gets icy it's dangerous to even be a pedestrian when there's a car slip-sliding its way along. The handful of 4x4s back here don't have that problem at all.

There are much smaller vehicles available than the one in the picture that have four-wheel drive, traction control, etc. I live in Wisconsin and lots of people have small cross-over SUVs or all-wheel drive cars and get by just fine in the snow and ice. My car is actually only front-wheel drive and while it takes some extra care, I still manage without sliding or getting stuck.

I was going to agree with this secret because my initial thought when I saw this episode was "Are they going on safari?" but after reading the comments, I guess there's a cultural divide here and it looks normal if you're British.

Actually, in the UK Land Rovers are typically considered to be markers of wealth; the well-off drive them. It's mainly because it implies that you have enough land to justify driving one, and land has been historically a marker of the wealthy.

Most people I know with Land Rovers are very far from well off, but then they're generally driving old beat-up ones that have had a couple of sheep living in the back.

Well in fact it's also considered pretty wankerish. Especially in London where I live. The roads are all from pre car days, so are really small. These big cars are way too big for the roads. They are considered to be sending a fuck off message to everyone, and that you really don't care about the environment, or other road users of these small crowded streets.
