Re: Popular fanon pairings you can't stand

OP

You and I appear to be in the same boat in terms of Dean/Castiel. I mostly stopped with Supernatural after the angels took over the plot, and it's very hard to find fandom works nowadays (especially new stuff) that doesn't have a Dean/Castiel slant to it (or alternatively, a Sam/Garbiel slant), which is frustrating.

(Just FYI, I stopped at season 7.) I feel the show has become a shadow of its former self. Too many characters, too much meta, too much fanservice, and dying means nothing. But like you, once everything started to come back to heaven and angels, my interest started waning. I much preferred the monster of the week stories. The overarching plots are a bit of a mess imo.

I haven't been in the fandom (in a big way) in years, but even then finding stuff that wasn't Dean/Castiel was a problem. And IDEK where Sam/Gabriel came from.

My boyfriend and I just finished marathonning Supernatural up to the end of season 5 (we need to buy the other seasons).

When we finished the last episode, Derek turned to me and went "Do you remember when demons were really rare to find and really tough to fight?"

Then I went "Yeah, now they just shiv demons in the kidneys on their way to the corner store. You know, with one of the bazillion demon-killing knives they've got on them now."

I totally agree with you--I honestly liked Supernatural's monster-of-the-week episodes. They were clever and well-done. Now everything is kind of a clusterfuck. Every damn week it's the apocalypse and there are demons and angels all over the place. There's never a cool take on an urban legend anymore. blah.

And to stay on topic: I SERIOUSLY DON'T UNDERSTAND SAM/DEAN. I don't get it! I don't! @_@

lmao, bazillion demon-killing knives they've got on them now. It's true! I don't mind them being more efficient at killing demons because they've got a lot of practice, but for a show about...well...supernatural elements I think SPN started to take itself too seriously. (And somehow still manages to be too silly at times as well. I'm talking about 'the Winchester gospel' and the meta episodes.)

I think my biggest problem with SPN after the angels made an appearance was that it never entirely felt like a show about Dean and Sam and monsters again (which is the reason I started watching). They had added a whole other set of characters (from a setting I didn't want SPN to go anywhere near, I.E. The Bible) and gave everyone their own back-stories and plot-lines and it just took over the show and turned it into something that felt completely different. So...idk what they're doing now, but I know if they don't ditch the whole heaven and hell thing, I most likely won't watch SPN again until it's over. (And then, mostly for 'closure'.)

And I totally understand why people wouldn't ship Sam/Dean (because there are plenty of incest ships I just don't get either, or that weird me out)...but I do. (Did. Whatever.)

Yeah, I agree. As much as I like Castiel (I think he's funny), it's not just "crazy road trip adventures WITH MONSTERS!" and that's why I liked it to begin with. I like road trip stories and I like monster stories. Perfection! But now it seems like it's aaaaaaaaaaaaall about angels and apocalypses and stuff. @_@
