School Plays

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity what school plays did your highschool put on? Did you take part and if you didn't take part did you go watch?

I attended a very conservative Christian highschool so a majority of the plays were a no-no and being unable to act or sing and having terrible stage fright I never to participated but always went and watched them.

I have no idea what the first was called but it was like a hybrid of Grease and a Westside Story, the second was Your A Good Man Charlie Brown, The third was Tintypes, the last was I think was The Unsinkable Molly Brown but that was the year there was a bad snow storm and it got cancelled.

I wasn't involved in the drama dept in high school but I was in school plays all through middle school (which was grades 4 - 8). We had a director that was all about musicals, so that's what we did. Willy Wonka, Sound of Music, Oliver, Annie, and Christmas Carol are what I remember.

I honestly have no idea what was going through my head joining drama every year, except that it was just one of those things everyone did. I have terrible nerves and stage freight and yet every year I got up there. Of course I only had lines in one of the plays. Mostly I was "chorus" or Oompa Loompa or other background type of roll as I can't sing or anything.

Mostly Shakespeare. I helped make props and costumes and stuff.

I was not big into school spirit stuff, but I do remember them doing Into the Woods (my first experience with Sondheim), Rumors (which I didn't attend, but a friend auditioned for), and West Side Story (which was HILARIOUS to watch, coming from my mostly-white, upper middle class, school; oh, the girl who played Maria, I loved her to death as a person but...boy, was that uncomfortable).

Inherit the Wind, Oklahoma, Wizard of Oz, Grease, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, and Death of a Salesman

There were others that I can't remember.

I wasn't involved drama club but I remember they did Arsenic and Old Lace and they also put on Little Shop of Horrors which I did see and was actually the first adaptation I saw of Little Shop of Horrors. I thought it was pretty good!

There was also the the Scholarship show where all the money they earned would go to a college scholarship fund. It was basically a skit show with some songs. Very funny. I went two years in a row.

We only put on one play the whole time I was in high school, and it was a horrible play. Sort of like Clue with a murder mystery. I played the ghost of a convict. No redeeming value to this play, but I got to wear ghost makeup and convict stripes. Whoo!

My primary school had a play every two, three years that was completely home-written so to speak. Famous songs were used for the melodies, but other than that the whole plot, all the lines, everything was written by this one teacher. And everything written in the local dialect too. I remember one was about how some criminal had stolen and hidden the joie de vivre so that mystery had to be solved etc. (It had been the 11th time a play was preformed thus the joie de vivre connection). The other one I was in was in '99 so it was all about the new millennium etc. We even had our very own millennium bugs. That is to say, the toddler dance number involved a whole bunch of toddlers dressed up and dancing as 'bugs'.

My secondary school had more standard plays, though I can only remember Little Shop Of Horrors.

Our theater department was actually pretty good (they always won UIL and state awards and shit) and they put on like five or six shows a year. But off the top of my head, I only remember Beauty and the Beast, Into the Woods (which was so fantastic, I was awestruck. I went to see it with my mom and she fawned over how great the orchestra sounded the whole time, haha. She couldn't believe that it was actually our school's orchestra and they didn't hire some people), All my Sons, Arsenic and Old Lace and Of Mice and Men.

I think our great arts department was supposed to compensate for how badly we sucked at sports

I went to an arts school with a full time drama department so there were a lot of plays. The Princess Bride in my first year was the play I loved the most. I always went to at least one play ever year. Most were short modern plays that I can't remember the name of.

We also had a school musical in addition to the plays and films and dances and concerts and art shows every year. I wasn't always in the pit band but I always went to see the musicals. Cabaret, The Music Man, and Jesus Christ Super Star were the musicals we put on and they were amazing. Our hall wasn't every good but the performances were semipro. I wish we could afford a better venue because they were worth it.

Our Town, A Christmas Carol, 'An Evening of One-Acts', including a very odd Edward Albee play called 'The Sandbox', 'A Toby Show', which was a kind of vaudeville thing, The Lilies of the Field....

That's all i can remember. I was in drama class and was in a couple of the plays, did set crew, and also did competitions, monologues, duets and one of the one-acts.
Fun times!

Also - we couldn't have a Thespians Club, because it sounded too much like 'Lesbians'. Yeah.

My high school's plays were pretty decent. Every year they did two big productions, one play and one musical, and then some smaller student-directed ones. Some that I can remember off the top of my head are Little Shop of Horrors, Jake's Women, Amadeus, Antigone... I think the best one they ever did was A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; that one turned out absolutely amazing.

I auditioned for only one play, Jake's Women, but I didn't get in. But the drama department also had a day when every acting class picked someone to perform a monologue, and I got to perform in that once.

Oh god. Okay I love theatre and I majored in it in college and intend to make a career in it. But my school did some pretty bad shows, especially the musicals. We did a play every fall and a musical in the spring. We did Auntie Mame, an original thing called the Beatles Project*, a tepid adaptation of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Beauty & the Beast, You Can't Take it With You (definitely the best play we did), Footloose (ugh), On The Waterfront (with additional scenes added to it to up the number of women!), and a BAD Alice in Wonderland.

The school year directly after I graduated they got a new director (actually there were two while I was there, the switch is between B&B and YCTIWY) who was an actual actress on Broadway and picked things like Arsenic & Old Lace, The Fantasticks, As You Like It, and SWEENEY FUCKING TODD. SO FRUSTRATING. Oh and now they have an actual theatre with 100+ stadium seats, state-of-the-art lighting instruments, great sound... Basically loads nicer than many professional regional theatres, let alone a cafeteria with a stage in it.

*a probably illegal thing using Beatles songs that the students (especially the seniors) were forced to write- the "plot" wound up being scarily close to that of Across the Universe over 3 years before it came out! It was AWFUL.
