There is an active fandom for The Monkees? I'm impressed. That is some longevity.

Yup; I was the mod for a Monkees comm up 'til about a year ago.

I heard Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow) on the radio today and nearly cried.

Sorry you feel the need to leave anon, but if the fandom isn't working for you, you're probably better off. I had hoped it would, but it happens. :/

At least you'll always have the music? (And the TV show. God, that TV show. I really want to watch it again... /probably said that last time, too. Apologies.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw - thanks :) And you're right - there's always the music and the TV show, so I'm not doing too badly.

I'm so sad about this because I love the Monkees to bits but hate the fandom. It is overwhelmingly full of boring commentary on their dick size and how they'd perform in bed and whether Pete was really bisexual etc etc etc. I feel like there's lack of space to actually just sit down and say, "hey, I really love the episode where..." I know, I know, it's harmless and I can scroll by, but it really does feel like the fandom is full of undersexed obsessives who want to write Mary-Sues all the time. And dear god, this fandom has the WORST fic I have ever come across.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
THIS

Ugh, I hate the fandom. I steered away from it pretty quickly.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I was really happy seeing there was a fandom, and then...

"It is overwhelmingly full of boring commentary on their dick size"

No. Just no. Happy I've avoided it, really.

WOW. I was super-active in the Monkees fandom back from '97 to '99, and YES, we were whackjob obsessive Marysue fangirls on a unending sugar high from hell, but we were never pervy litle creepers about it. It's one thing to be dingdong when you're 13, another thing entirely when you're 23.

/ please tell me someone here remembers the Swooning Hippie Chicks and our round-robin story of doom.
// or Mike's cross-dressing alter ego that was written into the story... who was named Carlisle Wheeling
/// lol, her inclusion pissed me off so much way back when... she's not canon, damn it!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I find the dick size discussing "pervy litle creepers" and the "whackjob obsessive Marysue fangirls on a unending sugar high from hell" are on pretty equal footing of DNW.

It's one thing to be dingdong when you're 13, another thing entirely when you're 23.

Now my brain is trying to write a pastiche of What's My Age Again. Darn you.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
See, you make it sound like a fun, creative yet silly fandom (much like the show itself) ... the current fandom just sounds plain creepy and uninspiring.

(These made completely from the outside looking in.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm so glad someone else finds the same thing! I've been feeling like it was just me :) I mean, it just seems like all the dick stuff and sex stuff is all there IS - and like you said - it's just incredibly boring if you want something different. And yeah, I've managed to find some good fic, but overall, the standard is depressingly low.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
This has a fandom? I kind of want to tell my mother about it. She was a big fan of them back in the day. She tells me she loved them far more than she ever liked the Beatles---that sounds like fodder for a secret in and of itself.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I was treasurer (we had about $5.00) for the Monkey's Fan Club in my neighborhood when I was a little girl and the show was on the air originally. Fun stuff. (am I old or what?!)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, that's so cute! Mostly because physical fan groups are becoming rarer---most people just fire up their laptop and squee.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Add me to those surprised to see there is an active Monkees fandom. That's really sad that it's wanky. They were so fun and silly, there really shouldn't be wank! YOU'RE HARSHING MY MONKEES MELLOW, FANDOM I DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the LJ side but the Tumblr side of Monkee fandom definitely has wank more often than it should. And I totally agree, the wank isn't actually that bad. It's just annoying. Like a fly that won't stop landing on you, no matter how many times you swat it.

I've had to take (looong) breaks from a few different fandoms, so I can relate. *internet hug* As long as it doesn't diminish the joy that the show gives you! That's what really counts.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I can see, the lj side of Monkee fandom isn't active any more, so yes, I was talking about Tumblr :) Yeah, the wankiness totally is like an annoying fly - I don't know why, but it just drives me nuts! But, like you said, I can still enjoy the show, and that's a big thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, I feel terrible for you, OP. *hugs*
Actually, though, thanks for posting this, because I've been going through something similar with a fandom for a thing I adore (Les Mis) being totally, totally toxic and rotten, and I was kind of despairing about *hating the fandom* while *loving the book/show/etc.*, so thanks for sharing your experience as someone who's come to terms with that/has found a way to enjoy the content when the fandom's awful. Gives me hope and all that.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! And I hope you figure out what to do about your fandom problem - it's no fun feeling that 'love the show/book, hate the fandom' feeling!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a person who loves, adores and still follows the canon from my previous fandom, I fully understand. I was so reluctant to let go of my fandom, because it was the most inspiring, fun community I'd participated in possibly ever. But the wanks, whether minor or major, kept re-surfacing - it was always the same goddamn topics, with the same goddamn know-it-alls and moralists and anti-moralists arguing their cases in tl;dr when they could've been producing fic - so the creative side of the fandom just seemed to die altogether.

My advice: grab the friends you made in that fandom and stay in touch with them via Facebook (if you're close enough to know each other's real names) or Twitter or even just email, and then leave the fandom for good. If you didn't make any super-close friends, just leave.

You might actually discover those friends abandoning the place with you, and then you can squee and discuss one-on-one, and it's actually better than inside the wanky community.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much - what you described happening with your previous fandom is pretty much exactly what I've found in mine. And thanks for the advice - I'll definitely be taking it!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-27 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, this is a full week late (I am so excited someone made a Monkees secret), so you probably won't ever see it, but on the off chance you do, I just wanted to say I'm in a similar boat -- I just started watching the show on a whim, and from what I've seen from the fandom, I do not want to get involved. If you ever want to fangirl/talk about the actual episodes, I'd be more than happy to.

I'm really sorry if this is creepy, I am just too terrified to try to talk to anyone in fandom b/c I feel I don't have much in common with them, but would love to discuss the actual episodes.
