My assignment is the opposite end of the spectrum, being a close RL friend with whom I share little fic chat considering our tastes in fics are wildly different. Seriously, her list of wants is my list of squicks and vice-versa.

Options:
1) Disappoint my friend with a fic that's not really what she wants, hear about it until reveal then deal with the fallout
2) Default
3) Try to write what she likes even though I don't have the knowledge to do it justice

Right now 3 is not getting me very far and 2 is looking more and more appealing.

Bonus 4: Rejoice that she doesn't read F!S

Which fandoms? If you want to attempt 3, I might be able to help you. :)

This is sort of why I don't do Yuletide anymore. I tried once, and got someone I know... and sort of really looked up to and was intimidated by. If our tiny fandom had had BNFs, she would've been one. So I really felt like there was no way I could actually write something good enough for her...

And then I thought about the possibility of getting a stranger, where I wouldn't even really know what exactly they were looking for, and I just... I... Well, maybe that would be better, right? Not worried about letting them down?

But then I took part in another exchange and did get a stranger who shared a bunch of my fandoms! But liked all the characters I didn't give a crap about and didn't seem to be interested in the ones I was comfortable with writing.

I think I care too much about pleasing the other party to take part in exchanges. :/ I've always really liked what I've gotten, but never feel I've held up my end of the bargain.

da

I once got a BNF as my recipient, who shared my likes and who I looked up to, and I was actually more excited than nervous. Jackpot, right? Nope. Life happened and they dropped out of fandom and I never heard from them, so presumably they never read my gift.

Nobody commented on my gift.

Decided to quit exchanges.

That really sucks. I've had it happen once for another exchange, but I liked the story I wrote, so I've learned to live with it.

ayrt

Well, on the bright side, it was an excellent motivation to actually finish something in a good time.

It's not all bleak, you're right. Thanks!

I think that sucks even more than my scenario. It's hard to write when every time I open Word I think "This person is an ignorant ASS" but I did have lots of story ideas before I found out so if I can turn off my conscience for a bit I should be able to get it done eventually, and then I don't have to have anything to do with them again.

Reading this I'm going to recommend defaulting in your case. It sucks, but it might be for the better. I wish you luck whatever you go with though!

If it helps, don't think of the story you're writing as being FOR that person; a lot of people read Yuletide fics beyond whatever person originally requested them, so think of yourself as writing for the greater Yuletide-reading community, maybe?

Yeah, this is a good idea. Pretend it's an anonymous prompt or request and that you're writing it for the fandom.

Yeah. Most yuletides I've liked the story written for me well enough, but I've loved stories that were written for other people in fandoms where I'd given up hope of finding something new.
