Scariest scenes in a non-R movie/non-TV-MA show? (or equivalent)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, F!S, what's the scariest movie or TV scene you can remember...but only from a movie whose rating was PG-13 or lower or a TV episode whose rating was TV-14 or lower (or the equivalent -- 12A I guess? -- for you guys outside the U.S....sorry I'm not well-versed in those designations)?

It's easy enough to think of really intense scary scenes that everyone thinks are scary in movies and shows that are meant to be mature, but the ones aimed at kids and teenagers tend to be more creative and quirky and affect people in more idiosyncratic and personal-preference-y ways.

The Dr. Jeykll/Mr. Hyde scene from The Pagemaster. Or maybe the melting ceiling scene. Or the crazy wolf monster scene.

Actually, The Pagemaster was just scary as all shit to little!me.

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. Especially the scene where he's dreaming and his house floods and it turns out he wasn't awake at all. That terrified little me. I can't honestly say it doesn't terrify big me, either.

Certain episodes of Doctor Who (pretty sure I screamed in sheer surprise at one point in Blink). And the boat ride from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has always freaked me out. For god's sake, at one point you see a chicken be decapitated! D8 How the hell did that get into a kids movie?

There was an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark that had what was supposed to be a fake hand in a box, but hand would come alive and choke kids as they slept. It hid under couches and beds and waited until you were asleep or not looking, then jumped up and tried to kill you. I watched this at a sleepover and was so scared I actually called my mom to come pick me up. I was terrified of under the bed for an embarrassingly long time and I totally blame this show.

(Disclaimer: I haven't watched this recently so my kid-brain could have remembered wrong. Still terrifying.)

Later...
So I just went and read plot synopsis for all the episodes of Are You Afraid Of The Dark and none of them sound like what I recall. I googled a bit and can't find anything. That's weird.

I don't remember the hand story (I see you couldn't find a synopsis--maybe it was a Goosebumps ep or something from a similar show?), but man, seconding AYAOTD like whoa. That one episode where the raggy thing came out of the wall (The Tale of the Quicksilver~) scared me so bad, I couldn't sleep in my own bed for the longest time. AYAOTD had some legitimately creepy episodes.

One from Doctor Who that's probably pretty innocuous for most people even by the fandom's standards -- the scene from "Asylum of the Daleks" where the Doctor's cornered in the ward with the extra-insane Daleks (who are extra-insane because they fought the Doctor), and they've all recognized him and are coming in for the kill and he holds it together, and holds it together, and backs away but holds it together, and gets very urgent but still holds it together...and finally just completely breaks down and starts screaming and sobbing at the top of his lungs in sheer mindless terror begging Oswin to please help him, please get him out, please, because the creatures he did god-knows-what to, and who as a result hate him so much other Daleks can't deal with them, are coming to get him.

Monsters? Not scary. Horrible nightmarish scenarios? Not scary. Paranoia fuel? Not scary. The Doctor being so scared he's screaming helplessly for someone to save him like the people who always scream for him to save them? Goosebumps all the fuck over. That was probably the only time I ever remember having to pause a tivod show and walk away for a minute.

The episode from Supernatural "The Kids are Alright" with the changlings. The jumpscares of showing the monsters' faces in the reflection did get me from how horrifying their faces were.

Man, that episode scared the bejeezus out of my mother. To this day all I have to do to freak her out her is smile, tilt my head and look like I'm going to say "Mommy" in that childlike voice like those changelings. She'll just know what I'm up to. It's hilarious, but I try not to abuse it. Much.

(Maybe not scary in the traditional sense...) The episode of Doctor Who where Rory was erased from existence.

Oh god that creeped me out so fucking badly. Just the idea of never having existed at all, and your loved ones being the same as they always were but simply never remembering you ever...*shudder*

Lots of X-Files stuff, but particularly the episode Home. It got banned from syndication for a while, some places.

Oh gosh. This made me go look up which episode it was that creeped me out so bad. It was Detour... the very last shot... ARRRGGGHHHH.

There was an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a doll that was enchanted or something and it was creepy as hell.

But the show that terrified me the most as a child was on a kids channel, but it was a sad episode, I have no clue what it was and nobody I talk to seems to remember it, so maybe it was a movie or I'm really confused.
It was about family and the boy had a pet squid or octopus in a fish tank and there was an earthquake and the tank broke and it died, while they couldn't do anything to help because they were standing under door frames/trying to protect themselves. There are no earthquakes where I live, but this terrified me.
Does it sound familiar to any of you? I'd love to know what it was. I saw it more than once, but given the plot it seems so unlikely for it to be on a kid's channel.

For years I couldn't stand to watch the Disney version of Sleepy Hollow because that whole sequence with the Headless Horseman freaked me out so bad. I remember my third-grade teacher made fun of me for being scared of it, which just made it worse.

Also, the scene where Violet turns into a blueberry in Willy Wonka disturbed me greatly as a child, but it doesn't bother me anymore.

The Pandorica episodes of Doctor Who for the fact that time gets rewritten so that Earth is completely alone in the universe. The psychiatrist telling little Amy, "You know there's no such thing as stars" terrifies me.

The one scene that I've ever seen in a "scary movie" that ever genuinely made me afraid of the dark that night (and several nights after, and still makes me uneasy to think about it if I happen to while I'm lying awake at night) was in a made-for-TV movie. I think it was called The Haunting, or something like that, about a family that moved into a house and then started witnessing weird paranormal stuff. There was a scene where the father was raped by a demon or something, but that wasn't even the scene that terrified me - the scene that terrified me involved one of the family walking into the kitchen or some such, and there was just this dark undulating cloud hovering there in the corner of the room, with vaguely eerie sounds coming from it that sounded like distorted whispering. At the end of the movie, they had an exorcism done, and thought they were safe... but then the very last scene had them walking in on this thing again.

It wasn't even like it should've been that scary... except that the movie was allegedly based on a true story. And while the thing about the demon was obviously more traumatic, something like that is kind of obvious, whereas you could totally MISS a freaky dark cloud hovering in the corner of the room... it could just be sitting there waiting for you...

I go for old horror, especially of the psychological kind:

Turn of the Screw (1959) with Ingrid Bergman.
The Haunting (1963)

I was reminded of this by another anon in the "little scary moments" thread a few days ago, but I can say it again: the scene in Doctor Who's "The Doctor's Wife" where Amy runs into Rory after being separated from him for just a few seconds, only to realize that it's been decades for him and he (Rory! Fucking Rory) lunges at her in a murderous rage while screaming at her to tell him why she left him. And then she finds him a "few seconds later" again, and this time he's a moldering skeleton lying in a room with "HATE AMY KILL AMY" written hundreds of times all over the walls.

Seriously, I'm just picturing all the child viewers looking at Amy and Rory and imagining them as their parents or other couples they may know...

Oh, God. When I seven or so I saw a re-run of one of The Real Ghostbusters at, like, six or so in the morning(or maybe it was Extreme Ghostbusters, idek). In the episode, one of the ghosts haunted the sewer or something. He would grab people in the shower and pull them down the drain.

Little me always made sure to not stand anywhere near the drain when taking a shower. It reeeaaally didn't help that our bathroom was down in basement where it's all dark and scary.

I don't know if this really counts as scary, but it kind of traumatized me as a kid. In the 15th episode (I think it's fifteen, anyway) of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, part of the crew of the submarine they're on gets trapped with some sort of poisonous gas. They seal off that part of the ship in a 'the need of the many outweighs the need of the few' sort of situation. Okay. Sucks for those guys, but whatever.

There's a throwaway character whose name I've long since forgotten but who you know will die because you've never seen him before that episode but he's given a name and a backstory right off the bat and it involves being in love and wanting to get home to his girlfriend or something. Total red shirt. Anyway, after the accident that's the crux of this episode's storyline, the main group of characters goes to the door that's sealing off the dangerous part of the ship where this dude is, and he says something about how he's not happy about dying (since there's no hope of rescue at that point), but it's okay because the rest of them will get to live, etc. Then, after a brief pause where it's implied that the gas concentration on his side is getting heavier, the guy starts screaming. Like full-throat screaming about how he's scared and he doesn't want to die, and to twelve-year-old me it was like actually listening to someone being killed. I think it was actually worse for me than if they'd shown a graphic death onscreen.

The show was/is rated 12+, so basically PG-13, and honestly, that part probably wasn't really worth remembering for most people with all the other fucked up crap that happened in that series, but that stuck with me. I've seen the series maybe a dozen times, but I've only been able to watch that particular episode once, it freaked me out so bad.

The suffocating rabbits scene in Watership Down. ENOUGH FUCKING SAID.
