Good acting in terrible scenes? (or terrible episodes)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever had that experience where a movie or TV scene (or even a whole episode) was really badly-written or stupid or annoying or was part of a sequence of events that made no sense or was OOC or something, but the actors did such a fantastic job of acting that you couldn't help but enjoy the scene anyway? Can be for any reason...really lame plot, but really fun/hilarious delivery, or a irritating wall-banger of a plot twist, but played out with beautifully intense and genuine emotions and stuff, or whatever.

Some of the actors in Merlin belong on a far better show.

Also Robert Carlyle in the entirety of Once Upon a Time. I mean, I'm a fan, but the show is really not very good, especially in the writing department.

The entire Doctor Who TV movie. The TVM itself is completely awful (two words, Roberts Master oh god why), but Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor is so damn amazing he's one of my favourites anyway.

Slightly OT, but I remember, judging solely from his appearance in still publicity photographs, expecting the Eighth Doctor to be a very stately, serious, aristocratic, lordly, mature character.

Bwahhahahah! Brain and brain - what IS brain?!?! (I know - that's not the good acting part, but it makes me laugh every time.)

The temporary Amy/Rory breakup in Doctor Who was one of the dumbest and most nonsensical plots I've seen on TV lately, but damn if Gillan and Darvill didn't act the hell out of all their scenes, both when they were being bitter and cold and horrible to each other, and during their eventual blowout/confrontation.

More generally -- in the crummier TNG episodes, no matter how stupid the episode was or how shitty the dialogue was or how bad the effects and costumes and props were, Patrick Stewart was always an amazing Captain Picard. He could make anything worth watching.

Agreed, especially about Amy/Rory. The storyline was shit but in the end they made it worth it for me.

da

This was actually a large part of the reason that I hung to Doctor Who for so long, instead of realizing that Moffat's writing/directing was terrible. I'd look at it and go, but it's so good, and it was only when I started seeing some of the lines in writing that I realized it was the acting that was good.

Every scene with Ewan McGregor and/or Liam Neeson in the Star Wars prequels. Liam Neeson SAVED Episode I pretty much single-handedly. And Ewan McGregor's acting reduced me to tears the first time I saw Episode III.

Oh, this. Whenever someone mentions Episode 1 in particular all I can think is, "Yay, Liam Neeson with a lightsaber!" He was fantastic and along with Ewan McGregor, they made that movie watchable; no one will convince me otherwise.

Natalie Portman was good in I as well, it's II and III where sloppy writing doomed her character.

Very true. I actually thought she did a good job acting wise in all of the prequels, but some parts were of course better than others (mainly because, as you said, the writing).

Eragon was a godawful movie, but Jeremy Irons really gave a wonderful performance that that crap didn't deserve. He could have just phoned it in, but he really brought a little class to that damn stupid movie.
