Zutara

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Marathoned ATLA. I had only seen a couple episodes before, but was familiar with the shipping wars. I knew that Zuko and Katara was the fan favorite ship.

What I DIDN'T know was how LITTLE there was in actual substance to the ship. I mean, I was expecting like some romantic moments here and there. Something. But there's nothing! Zip! It's all in their head! It always has been! I actually have nothing against the ship, and don't really ship anything in the show at all, but down the grapevine you would have thought that it was an actual relationship, like a Gale/Katniss or something.

At least Harry/Hermione were actually emotionally close and spent a lot of time together. Zuko/Katara had four episodes where she didn't hate him. I understand sexual tension, hate sex, etc--but there wasn't annnyyyythhiiiiiing.

So...yeah. I mean I get why--similarly aged major characters who are both attractive.

Yeah, so, does anyone have any good examples of, well...Zutarians? The way they were and how they felt about this ship and what way they were crazies about it? I just want to know where they thought that this was going to happen ever.

From what I remember, one of the big things that people used to justify the ship was the whole water/fire thing and how it would be a forbidden romance or something. I never really liked the ship, so I didn't much get the fervor over it.

Then again, the only two pairings I truly liked in AtLA were both incredibly unhealthy and nothing but subtext/crack, so I guess I shouldn't really be talking...

Man, I watched that crazyness unfold before my eyes. It sucked because everyone was so hung up on these make-believe hints at zutara that it overrode every other type of discussion and the hints they saw where caused by their shipping goggles cutting blood circulation to the brain.

I mean, by the third season the possibility wasn't completely baseless, but people were going nuts about it as early as season 1. So my point is that nah, there aren't any examples of zutara becoming canon that work in the context of how people were shipping them while the show was running.

I for one had a wonderful time!

You can guess who I was trolling back then.

Though oddly, my snuff fic where Zuko kills Katara after they make love was shockingly popular. AMONGST ZUTARIANS.

Never had I failed to troll so fully that I made the target happier.

Very glad I missed all of that (Nick is running the entire series starting late tomorrow night - joy!). I could see why people would like it, but very few of those ideas were touched upon in the show even lightly.
I think there was Ship Tease by the creators is supplementary material, so...

I would just like to announce to the internet that this fucking thing happened to me:

(during the wait for season 3)

Young Scrubber: Blahblahblahtheories... yeah, at this point it seems Kataang is more likely to happen... blahblahblah.

Some Fuckhead: No, Kataang is NOT more likely to happen because the show isn't over yet. GOD. I bothers me so much when people say a ship is more likely to happen than another.

Young Scrubber: Yeah, but Kataang has development. It's been building up this entire time. Zutara has no development. How can Kataang not be "more likely"?

(big fucking argument ensues)

Sometimes I hear people say the creators picking on Zutarians is childish and unprofessional. Frankly, they don't pick on them enough. I had to walk through a shipping minefield, only if you stepped on a mine instead of dying shit exploded all over you. And I wish I could answer your question of how people genuinely thought Katara and Zuko were going to be together. I honestly don't know what the fuck those people were thinking. Liking Zutara I get, but I feel like we all forget that there was a SIGNIFICANT GROUP OF FANS that was very disappointed that it didn't happen because they truly thought it had a chance.

I just have to barge in and say that this is one of the best sentences I have ever read on this comm ;) <3

I ship this. It's a crack ship. I never really saw it becoming canon, but the thing that sold it for me, that for some reason just... really really cracked me up, and that my friend and I jokingly quote whenever the topic comes up, is the line:

"I'll save you from the pirates."

It's one throwaway line, meant to be humorous when Katara's trying to get away from one set of badguys (the pirates) and calls out for help, only to get saved by Zuko, who really just is after the Avatar because he's a jerk.

But that was the start of the crack ship. *shrugs*

I do it with a lot of shows/characters but it's the people who swear it's canon that ruin it for everyone.

Also, since they get along so horribly at first, that may appeal to some people. I do like reading about characters who can't stand each other slowly learning about the other and coming to accept them.

I like Zutara.

Never thought it would be canon, though. I mean, I'm like you, watched the show after it aired, and I haven't been in fandom for it ever, so I only know about the shipping atmosphere from hearsay... but looking at it now? I honestly don't know how anyone thought it would be canon. Even Harmonians had more material to go on than Zutarans.

I think for me, it's less a matter of their interactions in the show itself and more about their personalities - they mesh nicely in my mind and I always felt like they could have an excellent dynamic that really appealed to me in an AU setting. In canon though? No way. I've always been completely baffled by the shippers who thought it would actually happen, and even the fanworks that try to "fix" the ending by turning it into Zutara don't do it for me. Never had a problem with Kataang or Maiko, so...

It's really weird because I ship a lot of characters who rarely or never interact on the basis of "well those two COULD be awesome! if they talked!" and almost always those ships are rarepairs... but this one has an enormous fandom following and copious amounts of fanon. Wat.

Harry and Hermione? Ahahahahaa. They had nothing. There was never -any- basis for that ship, it was all in their heads. I'd say Harry Hermione fans were way more delusional than Zutara fans

Re: Zutara

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

C'mon. That's pretty deluded. I'm not sure if you watched ATLA, but Zuko and Katara did not even LIKE each other. There was literally NOTHING indicating that Katara didn't hate him prior to The Southern Raiders. They barely interacted, AT ALL.

At least Hermione and Harry liked each other and were friends. Don't get me wrong--there isn't actually anything supporting it in canon. It's all Ron and Hermione. But there isn't anything supporting Zuko and Katara either, it's just that they a) didn't interact for a long time and b) she hated him for most of it when they did.

Can you actually provide examples for why you believe as you do?

Take a gander and behold the horror that was the "Zutara Evidence For The Intellectual Dummy" video series by AVidZktjo. There were also dozens of TL:DR essays on DeviantART back in the day. Just type in "Zutara essay" in the search bar and you should get most of them. The best ones were by the Big Zutara Three, MizSweet, GreenifyMe, and Trishna38.

It is comedy gold.
