Turning? Quite a few people in the neighboring countries have thought for a long time that the Russian government is bonkers. But yeah, even the thought of a fandom like this existing is pretty queasy.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who was very into British coalition slash when the government as first formed, the sensation when I suddenly really accepted that this was not funny but the life of myself, and most of the people I know, was quite startling.

I dread to think how some of the people you refer to would feel if they ever realised quite what they were talking about.

I'm not sure why I'm simultaneously surprised and horrified that there is porn of Putin. I mean, of course there is. It's probably written by the Kremlin's PR department.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
i dunno, politics aside, i think he's very good looking

also, he is an irl badass

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, WHY do people find Putin good-looking? He's plain-faced, going bald, and has a face like a rat. I mean, I don't "get" a lot of people everyone finds attractive, but Putin doesn't even fit the usual mold. And then you add in all the creepy things he's been suspected of (wasn't there something about killing a journalist), and the fact that the "badass" image is SO obvious and fake. I guess it just goes to show that if you're a man, you can have a face like an old shoe and a personality to match, and if you get famous enough some idiots will lust after you.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I love you too.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Some women (and men) prefer to be with partners who aren't as attractive as them. I have no opinion on Putin but wanted to put that out there.

All I could picture when I read this was RuPaul as a politician, which would be the most amazing goddamn thing ever.

RuPaul for president!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I was a little sad when I got it.
leikomgwtfbbq: (WANT)

I would pay buckets of cash just to watch Ru hosting a presidential debate. That would be pretty amazing, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
In that pic he looks like Mr Bean

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. I thought it was Rowan Atkinson as well.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Can we stop with the American-bashing on this site? It's like you can't go a single week without at least one secret saying shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well the vast majority of fandom as a whole IS American online, or at least so it seems. In the end that can result in culture clashes or even values dissonance with people who well, aren't.

I mean honestly this sort of thing seems more likely to happen in America than Europe. Not that I doubt there aren't some Europeans who could do this weird fandom too. But given the fact they're more likely to know how serious it really is or be affected by it or what have you, they're probably less likely even without the lower numbers on the net in general involved with fandom. (And Europeans are probably the second largest group on-line in fandom).

Also sometimes secrets can spawn others related to that topic or perhaps a certain real world event can spawn a few at the same time. Or sometimes it's just coincidence. Either way- due to making up a majority of the fandom, or at least being the largest 'group' the most likely clash is therefore America versus somewhere else.

Maybe the 2nd most likely being British versus something else I guess.

But what do you mean all the American bashing secrets (once a week?) I only recall one other one recently- you know the sj wank. I don't remember any others beyond that. American bashing I think WAS a regular thing a while back but not recently from my own memory.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree. It's honestly getting pretty ridiculous, as is the assumption that every single fucking person in fandom, whether they're doing something wrong or not, is an American.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more. I dabble in political fandoms myself, but even though those politicians are shitty and I fully understand that, they're not actively undermining human and civil rights and practically running a dictatorship like in Russia. It's just so much worse over there, and you'd think everybody in the world had caught on how bad it is what with this Pussy Riot trial.

I understand things appear different from far away, but it does kind of sicken me - I like reading dirtypoliticsconfessions or whatever that tumblr is, and just googling who some of the Russians were and what they've done, made me severely judge the people who posted those confessions. I live next door to Russia, so it's possible we get more news about the situation than the average person in countries west of us, but still.. It'd be one thing to fangirl the opposition politicians (who can't do anything because the system is fucked against them, fucked by Putin), but the oligarchs? Are you shitting me?

It depresses me that it's not surprising, because I've had people who seem intelligent and aware go "but Putin and Medvedev are such bros, I ship them!" .. because yeah, homoeroticism cannot be found anywhere else, apart from EVERYWHERE ELSE, and anyway, shouldn't human decency and sympathy for those struggling to get their voice heard in Putin's Russia override getting off on slash fanfic? Guess not.

end rant, I'm sorry, this has been pissing me off for a while now. I don't care if the fangirls are American, British, German, Ukrainian or even Russian - I judge them all the same.

People ship Hitler and his homies. I'm not surprised about anything anymore.

I agree, but the stuff in the secret is still squickier to me because these people are still alive and being terrible people. At least Hitler, et. al, aren't around anymore.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
From my vast experience in other RPF fandoms, it's perfectly possible to despise a politician and everything they stand for and still ship them with other politicians. It can even be empowering and stress-relieving. And it certainly doesn't mean that the baby shippers will grow up and vote for them or similar candidates blindly.

Though looks don't have much of anything to do with what I ship (I've shipped people I think are flat out ugly - lots of them,) that guy looks kind of cute in that pic, actually. No accounting for taste, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between being a rotten, horrible politician who makes decisions that negatively impact people's lives, but who operates in a mostly open, democratic system (no matter how corrupt or terrible that system may be, they can still be democratically voted out), and what's happening in Russia. So while you can ship dictators and the like without supporting them, the question remains: should you?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
As Russian citizen I can tell you that sitation in our politics is terrible and scary. We are gonna return to religious USSR (smth more like Iran) with no human rughts and no freedom. Who is in charge for this? Well, Putin definitly is. Many people in Russia hate him and his fking goverment, youth dreams about emigration. It is all fan when you live outside of our country, but when you are actually Russian..it is fking scary.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything I hear about it sounds scary. I really really really hope that things get shaken up and start to look up, because the reality sounds like something out of a dystopian horror novel.
