And of course...

Spidertime! Today's little guy has maybe the most American name ever. You (probably didn't) guessed it, Habronattus americanus! These gorgeously coloured little spiders are black, red, white and iridescent blue. As you can guess, they're found in America, and have even made it onto a stamp in 2009. And although it might look really fancy, it's actually pretty hard to spot in the wild, even if you do live in an area that's its habitat! The reason for this is seen in the third picture- pretty though these spiders may be, they're also really small.

That's all for today, though! Come back tomorrow for more pictures.

Storytime:

When I was a kid, my family was real close to this Army guy from a few doors down. During the summer, he, my brother, and I went picking through the edge of the woods, and my brother found a "snake." He gave it to the Army guy, who sometimes went around the woods catching snakes and taking them home to eat them. (Yeah, that guy was weird, but he was nice.)

But I was a huge fan of snakes and lizards as a kid, so I went running to the Army guy going "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that's a glass lizard, not a snake! See, it's got this and this and this, and that means it's a lizard!"

So the Army guy gave me the lizard to pet for awhile, then we released it back into the woods.

Good on you! I should have probably mentioned it as well, but for anyone who wants to know how to tell glass lizards apart from snakes, the main differences are that they can blink (snakes can't), that they have tiny little ear holes a short bit away from their eyes, and also that their jaws can't dislocate and expand in the same way that snakes do. Furthermore, if you see one with a funny coloured tail, it probably means that it shed its tail recently and is growing it back. Snakes don't generally do this.

Nice to see you here again!

I especially love the shrikes and the ring-tailed cats and those spiders sure are flashy as well!

(I'm also embarrassingly proud of myself that I recognised two of the three Chinese characters in the panda's name...) X)

If you liked the pictures of ringtailed cat, you may liked this video of it! It's seriously cute.

(And good job! Was it 小 and 礼 or 小 and 物?)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how it is curious and cautious at the same time. Thanks!

(It was 小 and 物... makes me want to brush up on my Mandarin)

Do it! It's useful. :D

Tomorrow's spider is weensy too! If not weensier. Is that a word? weensier? It should be.

Weensy is totally a word. :)

Hello!

I want a glass lizard! They are awfully cute and I bet they are soft.

I do not know how soft they are, but they are cute, aren't they? Most of them is actually tail. I can't get you a real one, but I do have a picture of someone holding on to one. Here it is!

The one that I got to hold for awhile was soft and quite friendly. He just sat there chilling on my arm while I petted him. And that was a wild glass lizard, too!
