Snape always had the "bad boy" thing going for him, and when the last book came out all the fangirls went "He wuz in luv wiht Lilli this hole tiem? He must be the BESTEST EVAR!" (I'll admit my fangirl heart melted a little, although I still think he let his bitterness turn him into a dick.) And Loki...actually, yeah, Loki's a whiny genocidal douchebag. He just happens to have the bluest eyes that ever blued, or something like that, which means he's excused from everything in the history of ever.

The books go out of their way to describe Snape as pretty much heinously hideous though. He has bad hygiene, sallow skin, is uglier than a gargoyle, etc. Like, this happens on MANY occasions.

But then you go to fanart and he looks absolutely nothing like this.

Snape wasn't really the typical bad boy, though. The bad boy that girls tend to love is the attractive, arrogant, wild guy who lands himself in detention a lot--so basically Sirius and James. Snape was the ugly-as-fuck, creepy racist guy who was part of a shady "gang" and got violent once in a while. So even by stereotypes, Snape isn't the type to get lots of fangirls.

He got fangirls because of Alan Rickman. There were obviously fans of his character before (and after) that had nothing to do with AR. But it's preeeetty obvious that the large part of fandom that thinks he's this suave, dark, tragically romantic poetic genius are being a bit misguided by the casting. Just check out the fanart, as iggy above pointed out.

~There were obviously fans of his character before (and after) that had nothing to do with AR.~

Yup. (I actually don't find AR attractive or use him as my mental image of Snape.) And most of my fangirling happened pre-OotP, so some of the revelations we got beyond that point actually turned me off a bit.

Didn't a similar thing happen with Tom Felton, too? (I can't remember if the whole leather pants debacle happened before or after he was cast.) Much to JKR's chagrin - I don't think I found anything in DH funnier than her getting her digs in by making him overweight and balding.

I don't find AR especially attractive either, but clearly most of the fandom does! but yeah, same thing happened with Draco. He was described as having a pointed face, kinda rat-like I think, but after TF was cast, it was all "DARK HOT PRINCE OF SLYTHERIN!"

leatherpants!draco makes more sense all of a sudden

sigh

He still has a pointed, rat-like face. I don't get why people think he's attractive. His forehead is huge and he's just... not pretty.

I do follow him on Twitter, though, and he comes across as really awesome there.

He got fangirls because of Alan Rickman.

Well, not in my case. It was book-Snape who got to me, and long before the whole unrequited-Lily-love thing came into focus.

I always bought into the idea that Snape was against Voldemort, and it seemed so incredibly brave to me that he was willing to infiltrate the Death Eaters when their leader could read minds.

And bravery is the key, I think. Many people find self-confidence very attractive, because they wish they had it themselves--they wish they could just not give a shit what other people think of them.

Villains have that kind of self-assurance almost by definition; they're acting counter to society's wishes. So villains really resonate with a certain segment of the audience.

tl;dr: Nuh-uh; book-Snape's totes hot.
