Need some encouragement

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be able to memorize lines, even monologues, really easily. However, in the years between my last acting experience and this class, I've had so many nightmares about being up on stage and forgetting my lines, that my confidence about memorization has been completely shot. I haven't been able to do it nearly as well as I used to.

I have a really long monologue coming up as my final project and I have to be off-book by Wednesday or my teacher will give me another lecture. I've never felt this nervous about acting. It used to just come to me. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but maybe I'll do better with some encouragement, so I've come seeking it from anons on fandomsecrets....

Good luck!!! One thing I remember in my experience was that when doing it on book it seemed like I wasn't memorizing it, but then I went off book it was like "Oh, I guess I remember this?" Idk if it's similar for you.

But yeah, hope you do great!

SA

Yeah, that's how it is for me. It feels like I memorize without even trying, but it's the process of reading it over and over that does it. I guess it was easier in high school because I had to do that for the entire class period, even if I thought I had it memorized, I had to go over it until the bell rang. In college, I have to practice outside of class hours, so nobody's breathing down my neck forcing me to run it a hundred times a day, and I didn't realize until recently that's actually what I have to do.

it might not work for everyone, but for me, writing what i have to say over and over and over and over made me memorize things like woah

first the full text, then sentence by sentence, then paragraph by paragraph, then the parts that aren't sticking, then full text again, and so on until I had it all memorized

I have a story for you? If that counts.

I was so nervous in school about a Shakespeare monologue I had to recite that I faked sick for a week. The reason I was nervous was that I thought I wouldn't be able to remember it when I got up to speak. Ended up not having to do it at all.

I'm now 25 and I still remember the whole thing. I'm also very annoyed at myself for not believing I could do it at the time.
