...What? Sorry, but you seem to be idealizing a little bit - and maybe a little confused on what asexuality actually is? It just means that asexuals aren't sexually attracted to anyone, not that they don't have sex or get [and enjoy] physical pleasure from having sex.

Oh, Christ, can we not? Just... not? There are like half a dozen different definitions of what asexuality means, depending on which internet community you're on, and wanking about which one is the One True Asexual definition is even more tiresome than the arguments about who's really childfree or whether the correct term is 'disabled person' or 'person with a disability.'

If s/he identifies as asexual, s/he's asexual. Let it go.

Uh, is it really that big of a deal if people talk about it? It's an important thing to talk about. If you don't like it you can scroll by.

also, fwiw, I've only ever seen one definition of asexuality espoused by actual asexual people

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You're completely ignoring the fact that the OP, iirc, said that they *didn't* identify as asexual, but that they were '~so glad that there were people living like this plant species who doesn't have sex that they admire~'.

And, fwiw, I *am* asexual and the main definition I've seen in the asexual community is the one above, basically.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP said they don't really identify, so the point is unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't really identify with asexuality" Read, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Asexuality does just mean that the person isn't sexually attracted to anyone, but among those people, there is likely to be a higher proportion of those who voluntarily don't have sex and/or don't enjoy any type of sexual activity than among the general population. It's not the defining trait of asexuality nor is it required to be asexual, but it's highly associated.

Here you go:

There is a higher chance you'll find an asexual that doesn't have sex (as opposed to say, a hetero or homosexual). But that isn't their defining trait, as has already been pointed out. And OP, you're not alone in identifying as someone averse to having sex while not identifying as asexual. It's good to remember that people are individuals, and each person has his or her own sexual preferences, regardless of sexuality.

this is a good comment

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. I hate how these always turn into people debating what asexuality means and calling OP names for not fitting into their definitions.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think you might be idealising asexuality a little bit, OP - we're not all completely chaste. I am, though, and I totally understand your aversion/repulsion when it comes to sex. I have no sexual attraction or desires at all, and to me sex seems unpleasant and messy at best, so when I find a book that doesn't feature or merely glosses over 'sex stuff' it's really refreshing and in a way, a relief. My new favourite author, Alastair Reynolds, writes really good sci-fi and I can only think of 3 instances in his books so far where sex has even been mentioned or hinted at. It's wonderful.

Are you saying that you are not sexually attracted to anyone, but you're not asexual? What does that even mean? That is, in fact, the definition of asexuality. Someone who does not experience sexual attraction is asexual. Is there a reason you don't want to see yourself as an asexual person?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP never said they weren't sexually attracted to anyone, only that they find sex repulsive. The two are difficult to pair together but not mutually exclusive. It's also possible not to have really experienced sexual attraction to a person but to still not rule it out. I see it similarly to, for example, a woman only having experienced strong feelings for another woman, but not identifying as homosexual. If one doesn't feel the label is accurate, maybe it's not.

I find this weirdly amusing, mostly because I've always associated Chalker with putting massive amounts of his own fetishes into his books (transformation, bodyswap, genderswap, mind control, sex with nonhumans -- really he gets pretty blatant about it). Heck, that's one reason my teenage self was so hooked on his books for a while.

Still, whatever helps you sort through your feelings and find what's right for you!

I do agree that the plant people (I forget the name of them right now) who don't have sex are only part of Chalker's world, given that he goes into fair amounts of detail about the sex many of the other races have and he is obsessed with gender and body swaps, but I thought it was kinda cool to see a Chalker secret on here :) I still enjoy his books now, though my favourite series of his is the Wonderland Gambit.
