Oh, come on. That's just lazy trolling. We see him do terrible things (talking show here, haven't read the comics). What's there to misunderstand about him sending Merle to hunt down and kill Michonne just because she wouldn't do want he wanted? What? His zombie head aquarium wall is just an ode to his favorite show, Futurama, and not a totally creepy psycho power play thing?

lol, I love how you are citing the comic as a source for evidence that he's not a depraved character, when if you have actually been reading the comics, you'd know that he's a horrible monster, because you'd know what he does to his daughter, Michonne, Rick, Lori, Judy, etc.

The Governor is an actual monster who rapes people and kills and tortures them and gains player from it.

I think he's like Helena Cain, where you think she's just an evil monster at first and then later you find out what made her like that.

And the comic page was just to explain why he looked at the heads.

I don't understand why this affects the 'evil monster' part at all. Either he's a terrible person who does appalling things or he isn't. What happened to him in the past (tragic or not) doesn't excuse that kind of behavior.

JSYK, I don't actually read the comics but I've been heavily spoiled for them, so I'm aware of some of what he's done but I'm not too familiar with his backstory. That said, I don't see why that would affect my opinion of his actions in the comic or show.

It doesn't excuse him, but I think it humanizes him and makes him a little more sympathetic.

Well, I guess I need to read his backstory but after hearing about some of the shit he's done in the comic, I doubt I could ever feel much sympathy for him.

Tragic pasts may not excuse behavior, but having empathy/sympathy for a person's past hardships, even if they are a horrible person now, is normal. Knowing part of the reason why someone is fucked up now may not mean that you were misunderstanding their horrific actions, but it does help better explain why they would take extreme and horrible measures.

So, he's still a terrible person who does awful things, but the added element of a tragic past adds an extra dimension that allows for you to, potentially, both feel sorry for them and feel like you understand them better.

I completely understand this in theory (and in plenty of other cases with different characters I've experienced it), but I just can't ever imagine feeling sorry for the Gov. Tragic past or not. Maybe I'm wrong and I would, or maybe that's awful in itself, but that's just how I feel. I think any thoughts of sympathy would immediately be wiped away after thinking of his actions. If people feel sympathy for him because of his past, then alright, that makes sense. But idk...some of these comments don't come off as being just that, they come off as 'but he isn't entirely at fault'. But again, that's just imo.
