For me, I really like how they plan to do the co-op, because I haven't seen co-op quite like that before. It's nice that it's optional, and nice that you appear to be able to go your own way. I love playing co-op with my buddies, but I don't like being attached at the hip so much - sometimes it's more fun to do your own thing. This sounds like it might be the perfect mix of the two.

And hey, possibly they'll make it so that you can play Carver's side of the campaign? Or have a friend over to play him split-screen?

EDIT: Just realized... why can't you play online? You appear to have an internet connection.

Not OP, but... because not everyone have friends buying the same games? I had that problem with Dead Island, because no one I knew would buy and play it with me. Tried with random matching several times, but it was always a disaster. In best cases the people it joined me with just stood there and disconnected, in worst they spew insults on me over my inability to accent english properly, and being a stupid cunt/whore/fat bitch/etc so yeah. No multiplayer for me again, single player that's it.

Huh. That has decidedly not been my multiplayer experience with random people. You can always turn the mic off, after all. A lot of people don't even have a mic.

That said, in this case I just think the OP hasn't done their homework. You're not only going to be able to select Carver in SP, but also be able to play him in split screen co-op, so unless the OP has no friends at all willing to come over to their house, they'll manage.

I generally keep quiet when I can, (I love Mass Effect 3 multi exactly because that it allows me to stay silent) but sometimes people demand answer and it can get really awkward or nasty from there. I mostly blame the fact that I'm not a native english speaker.

I had no idea about the split-screen co-op! That actually sounds really cool!

OP here: I have done my homework (because I really want to play co-op!) but have an annoying set of tl;dr circumstances that mean I can't play online:

I moved to a foreign country about a year ago, so when it comes to friends back home the 10-hour time difference means I'm awake/have free time when they're asleep/at work and vice versa. The friends I've made here are all really great, but they're either 20/30 years older than me and are decided non-gamers, or my age and decided non-gamers (as in, they've never even owned a console before. I don't think something like DS3 would be the best introduction to gaming those people could have even if I could convince them to give it a try)

Other issues I have are that my home internet is a finicky creature that doesn't always want to connect to my PS3 (and likes to randomly shut itself down when I try), that I'd be playing the US import version of the game whereas - I assume - my PS3 would be trying to connect me to other players playing this country's version of the game (I have no idea if there would be some sort of software compatability issue there, but it's something that's crossed my mind) and while I'm okay on a day-to-day basis in the language of the country where I live I'm nowhere near the point where I'd be able to happily communicate with other people in an online environment in said language, especially since online gamers in this country have a well-known reputation for being very much like the worst parts of the sexist dudebro gamer-culture in the US. Being noticeably foreign, not fluent in their language and female the moment I open my mouth, I really can't see online play going down well.

I know that's a really unusual and specific set of circumstances and that most people aren't going to have those problems, but I'm still a bit sad at the thought that I'm probably going to have to stick with watching Lets Plays after I finish the game to get the full experience, that's all.
