Downloading (fan-)vids from youtube?

Is there some kind of software that saves videos from youtube even if the videos are blocked in your country?

I hate losing great vids just because I can't save them to my harddrive. :/

I have no idea if they work for blocked videos, but there are several sites online that let you do just that.

Is the desktop version of that downloader safe to, uh, download? (My parents told me never to pick up strange applications if I don't know where they've been.)

I just use a mozilla firefox plugin myself... but you can also just do it right on the website. Look on the left!

Copy and paste your link on the keepvid website. It's free and you don't have to download anything!

Also, I know chrome has an application that you can put in your toolbar and it automatically finds media content on that page. Don't remember what it's called, though. :/

Maybe Jdownloader? I usually use it to dl youtube vids, though the vids are usually available in my country..

I already have a downloader, but it only worked on vids that were available in my country. But with insanenoodly's suggestion it also works on blocked vids, so I'm good now. But thanks!

It's really a pain in the ass how hard it is to download Youtube vids these days. Even as little as a year ago it was relatively painless, but now it's like pulling teeth. I often rip audio I need for samples for my band and I'm at the point where half the vids I need, I'm just setting the record input to stereo mix and hitting play on the video, because the video ripping sites I use refuse to actually rip them.

I prefer this one because it's a Mozilla-approved FF extension (also available for all the other big browsers) and in addition to the option to have the dl button on the toolbar, they also embed a dl button on every youtube page. It's the only youtube video downloader I've used that has ALWAYS worked and it works on a lot of sites that the other downloaders don't.
